5 Ways to Cut Costs with the Latest Technology

By Tex Freitag

Some of the best things in life are free, right? Unfortunately, not a lot of things can be free but they can cost a little bit less.

Some may look at technology and see it as a black hole for your money. For example, televisions always seem to be getting better and better while jumping in price. Cell phones are regularly peaking into four digits.

Even though technology does present some incredibly expensive options, that doesn’t mean it has to break the bank or empty your wallet at the drop of a hat. In fact, there are plenty of ways that you can save money with technology. Here are some of the best:

Never Buy First Edition Tech

OK, this really isn’t saving money per se, but more of a lifestyle choice. If you’re big into technology, you might always be on the lookout for the next big thing and want to jump at the chance — but it’s always better to wait and take the patient approach. After all, many products have bumpy launches and others, despite all the hoopla, never really make it. Think about 3D TVs; in 2011-2012, everyone was talking about how 3D was the next big thing. Channels were putting out 3D content and video game consoles were even developing 3D options.

Now? You’d be hard-pressed to find someone with a 3D TV.

Use Smart Home Devices

Your biggest utility bill is likely your energy bill.Installing smart home devices, such as light bulbs, thermostats, and surge protectors are an easy way to cut back on your electric bill. You won’t see the change overnight but after a few months you’re going to start noticing a dip in your overall prices.

These devices will turn off the heat, A/C, or themselves in order to save energy while being as efficient as possible. You don’t have to worry about running back home because you left the heat on. These devices control everything and will make your house more efficient. Plus, you can say you’re going more green!

Cut Out Cable

Cable prices can get so high, you might feel like you have to start borrowing money just to pay for them. One of the easiest ways to save you a bundle is by cutting the cord, or ditching the dish, and switching to an Internet-only TV plan. Even though you’ll be losing your subscription, you’ll still be able to watch you favorite shows and movies. You’ll probably even get to watch a little more.

Focus on Renewable Energies

Of course, solar energy can help you save on your energy bill. Yes, you will need the right angle and no trees blocking the sun, but it’s still a fantastic option for helping save you money.

There are also plenty of other renewable energy methods that are becoming more and more affordable for homes. With time, these items have become more efficient and useful for your house. They’re not just for people who were dying to go green, they can be used by everyone.

Take Advantage of Phone Apps

When it comes to our phones, there’s little they can’t do.Sure, you can download an animal soundboard to bother your friends with, but there are plenty of other apps that help you look for great deals around town. These apps will scour the internet for any available coupons or deals and point you in the right direction when it comes to buying groceries, gas, or any other essentials.

Many places now accept electronic coupons or codes too, so make sure you find an app for your area and start saving money.
