The Post-Pandemic Future and the Search for New & Exciting Hobbies

By Tex Freitag

The winter months usually coincide with that particular time of year when most people want to try something new, some fun and exciting hobby or pastime that will reveal to them new forms of entertainment they never knew existed. It is the same kind of feeling that drives people when they make their resolutions, a list – more or less long – of wishes, hopes and goals to be achieved during the new year, often through new activities and new experiences to be tried out for oneself, to be lived fully and with gusto, without thinking about anything other than the experience itself.

In people’s good intentions, however, there is a lowest common denominator: it is the excitement for the unknown, for something that appears to be at hand and yet we have not yet had the opportunity to experience, for all the infinite possibilities that the new year, at least in the initial hopes, seems to invariably bring with it. New training opportunities, a sporting activity, a dance course, or even simply a series of trips abroad to faraway places one has always dreamed of visiting.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic is hampering the organization of numerous trips to all parts of the world, in these years people seem to be concentrating on more concrete, more attainable and within reach goals, in the hope of being able to access them immediately and without any kind of complication.

A desire for redemption

It is quite easy to understand the reasons that lead people to seek out new activities, new passions that can entertain and amuse them. After a year and a half in which most people have been forced to deal with the global pandemic, with deaths, contagions, lockdowns and curfews, the desire for rebirth and personal redemption is extremely powerful, and manifests itself also through the selection of new, interesting pastimes capable of filling their days, projecting them towards a future of unlimited happiness and serenity.

Martial arts courses are an activity that can be experienced by everyone, and in an extremely pleasant way: with a quick search on Google, you will realize in no time that in your city there are organized courses of all types, from karate to judo, from aikido to taekwondo, usually in gyms or clubs that are more or less well equipped, but always able to offer participants an extremely exciting and satisfying course. By approaching these disciplines with the right spirit, in fact, people can embark on a valuable personal journey of self-discovery, with the real possibility of starting one of the most satisfying activities of their lives. In fact, most athletes begin by chance, and years later, after long practice, the martial art has become an integral part of their lives, as if the spirit of the discipline had merged with the consciousness of those who practice it.

New educational opportunities

People could also take advantage of the New Year to learn a new language: this kind of experience is one of the most rewarding of all, as it allows everyone to learn an idiom that could allow them to move, work and even live in another country, with the possibility of meeting other people driven by the same passion for quality education. Nowadays, learning a new language doesn’t have to involve moving around: there are plenty of apps that allow everyone to learn languages easily and intuitively, with the invaluable support of technology and digitalization.

Another way to start 2022 in a fun and exciting way is to try out the innovative gaming methods offered by gambling platforms, including some portals that allow new players to access no deposit bonuses, offering them a wide choice of sites and online casinos to choose from. In this sense, each player is guided in the choice of the game that best suits his or her personal needs, with the possibility of redeeming some rich bonuses immediately without having to make a deposit. Each game is carefully selected by a team of experts, who carefully evaluate the credibility, reliability and speed of payment, in order to offer each user the best gaming experience imaginable.

By starting the New Year on a high, immersing themselves in exciting and fun experiences, people are likely to extend these ecstatic feelings throughout the rest of 2022, making it a rewarding and fulfilling year.

Since this is an economic site, I was surprised to see that learning to build and fix was not included on this list of hobbies. Granted, I am a carpenter (retired from paid work), but I would rather build than just about do anything. Over the years I have rebuilt several homes which allowed both my wife and I to retire in our mid fifties. My last major project was buying an old beater house on a river, and renovating it top to bottom. We now live on the water in a house of incomparable value which I invested apporox $200K in; total, including the initial purchase. My elderly neighbour needs a new cabinet constructed. I am building her a 4′ long butcher block table with a 3″ thick countertop…all made of repurposed hard maple flooring. She has asked for cabinet doors and she will get them for the price of some sheet stock and hardware. She wants to pay me and my bill is that she has to donate what she thinks it is worth to the local scholarship fund for kids that need some cash for school.

Hobbies can be creative and rewarding at the same time. Many condos have workshop and studio space for their co-owners, and high schools and community colleges offer evening courses in just about everything.

Excellent point, Paul. I wish more high schools still had vocational shop classes like they did when I was in school; everybody had the opportunity to become at least familiar with carpentry, machining, basic electrical, and auto mechanic work.

I would like to study, and learn some of my easier ancestral languages. I started learning German but stopped. I’d like to learn German, Cherokee, and Portuguese. So far, all I can do is call you a few terms inappropriate for polite company.

Mr. Dave taught them to me. (wink)

Last year, I was planning to have my first trip abroad with my parents. However, the pandemic has ruined that plan. Hopefully this year, things will go more smoothly and I can do more of the things I want to do.
