Is South Boston the Right Neighborhood for You?

By Sabado Domingo

boston waterfrontIf you are relocating to Boston, you might be struggling to know exactly where to stay. The state capital of Massachusetts is a beautiful city and is home to many different people scattered across a variety of neighborhoods. South Boston, or Southie as it is affectionately called by locals, is a great choice. Here are some of the reasons you should consider South Boston when moving to this amazing city.

Great Property Options

Gentrification hit this neighborhood a few years ago and it has resulted in many unique South Boston homes for sale sprouting up all over. Whether you are searching for the perfect condo or a converted block of apartments, you will be able to find it. The South Boston real estate market even has townhouses available for those who would like a little more space.

With schools and places of faith everywhere, you will be able to cater for your household’s needs no matter what. South Boston is a welcoming neighborhood and they are ready to invite everyone in. Community events frequently happen so you should have no trouble integrating yourself into life in Boston.

Whether you want some classic or something a little more modern for your home, you will be able to find it here. There are many beautiful examples of New England architecture you could invest in or you could pick a brand-new contemporary building. There is something to accommodate all tastes here with little issue.

If you claim Irish ancestry, South Boston is going to be one of the best places for you to move to. This is the historic Irish neighborhood of Boston. Though many other nationalities have now moved in and created a vibrant mixing pot, there are still plenty of Irish who call this neighborhood home.

South Boston is where the iconic St Patrick’s Day Parade takes place. It is the best day out in the entire city and you will have a wild time as you celebrate. Even if you arrive after the day has past, you can head out on the Irish Heritage Trail tour to find more about the history of the Irish in Boston.

Buying South Boston real estate gives you great access to the rest of the city. The Boston Metro is extensive and it will take you all across the city with ease. If you don’t work in South Boston, you can be certain that there will always be a way for you to get across the city.

Don’t forget about the harbor too. You can very easily grab one of the ferries and sail across the harbor. It might make a great day trip for a quieter weekend or it might even become a key part of your commute. If you are new to the city, you need to hop onto the ferry for some of the best views of the cityscape for a really affordable price.

Entertainment and Attractions

The main site of interest in South Boston is Dorchester Heights. This is a key site from the Revolutionary War and the Siege of Boston. It is a beautiful hilltop with a park and a monument to view. You can also wander around Castle Island; this harbor-side walk is the perfect place for a run or cycle. You can even stop and watch planes take off and land at Logan Airport. The Institute of Contemporary Art is a must for any art lover. Even the building itself is stunning. Its glass walls can’t be missed and its harbor-side position means that everyone is going to be able to spot it as they sail past. For a little bit more history, make sure you swing by the Boston Tea Party Museum. From here, you can learn all about the Boston Tea Party, one of the most famous events in the city’s history.

Eat Your Fill

You won’t ever go hungry living in South Boston. No matter where you head, there will be something delicious to eat. As well as all the trad classics, you can find lots of Boston landmarks to try as well. One of the most-loved places to eat in South Boston is Sullivan’s. Sully’s, as it is known by locals, is on Castle Island and it is one of the best places in the neighborhood. It opened in 1951 and it is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The lines might be long but they move quickly and the food is well worth the wait. You can pick up hotdogs, a lobster roll, and more from this amazing landmark.

If you are heading out in the evening, there is nowhere better to go than Drink. There is no menu at Drink; instead you speak to your bartender about what you might like. They will mix up a great cocktail for you on the spot; if you don’t have one in mind already. You can also grab some amazing things to eat whether it is an elevated bar snack or something a little heavier. No matter what you want to try, Drink is ready to offer it to you.

Get Ready for a Move to South Boston Today

Though there is a long-standing joke about “yuppies” moving into this tight-knit neighborhood, there are plenty of reasons to fall in love with it. South Boston is one of the best options you could choose when moving to this city. With plenty of millennials now calling Southie home, you know that you are always going to be in good company. Where do you want to live? In a leafy backstreet or in a modern condo with a view of the harbor? It is never going to be too difficult to find something you love in this city. Take a look at some of the properties and see what you can find now. There is always going to be somewhere beautiful to discover in South Boston. This neighborhood is waiting for you to join!

Boston is a great city if you don’t mind the tough winters.

I don’t normally read these things, Len, but as I’m a life-long Redsox fan, I decided I would … until I got to this:

“The main site of interest in South Boston is Dorchester Heights. This is a key site from the Civil War and the Siege of Boston.”

Really? Those southern Rebels made it past New York all the way to Boston? Who knew? Good thing Boston had George Washington to protect them during the Siege.

Civil War, Revolutionary War … what difference does it make?

But seriously, Gee, good catch. I’ve changed it.

(By the way, I’m still waiting for your Red Sox to return the World Series trophy they stole from my Dodgers two years ago!) 😜

Well, now that the Dodgers bought the Redsox pitcher that womped them in 2018, not to mention an outstanding Redsox outfielder, they might just win their own this year. 😀

Maybe so! And they won’t have to cheat to do it too! 😜

Did you know that Red Sox pitcher was originally drafted as a Dodger? He was! I think David Price is past his prime, but is still a capable #4 or #5 starter.

The Question of the Week:

Did you buy any fireworks to celebrate Independence Day this year?
