8 Ways to Reduce Divorce Costs

By Tex Freitag

marriage figurinesGetting a divorce is emotionally exhausting and usually financially draining; most people have to start their lives over. Some couples spend recklessly on their divorce without thinking about the consequences. With that in mind, here are several tips for those of you who are looking for ways to save some money during divorce:

Tip 1: Agree to an uncontested divorce

Contested divorces are expensive and extenuating; they require attorneys and long hours in court. They’re not only stressful but also they end up with a negative balance on one’s bank account. Sometimes this can’t be avoided but if there’s a possibility to get out of your marriage without going through this kind of divorce, then you should consider it. Uncontested divorce can be filed for online if the spouses agree on how the assets and debts get shared between the spouses. There are many online companies that offer assistance with divorce papers. This is probably the cheapest way out of a marriage and couples should consider it.

Tip 2: Change your spending habits

Most people cope with divorce by spending their savings, seeking distractions or trying to enjoy their newfound freedom. But going on luxurious holidays or buying expensive clothes in order to cope with the recent break up won’t heal the wounds from divorce. If anything you need to save more money to restart your life. For distractions, find new hobbies that don’t involve excessive spending.

Tip 3: Pay attention to shared assets

During the divorce, each partner should get a fair share of the common properties. However, if they can’t agree on the division of assets, mediators are available to analyze the situation. And if the divorce is uncontested, the problem can be solved without a lawyer. Some people will send you to a lawyer for this matter, but hiring a lawyer is more expensive than a mediator.

Tip 4: Get an online divorce

Filing for an uncontested divorce with an online service has a huge financial benefit for both spouses. There are many websites in each state that will help you to file the divorce papers. The only condition is that the divorce should be agreed on by both spouses. This is probably the best low-cost divorce option available. The company will provide you assistance with filing the divorce papers and all you have to do is to submit them to the nearest court and you’re good to go!

Tip 5: Be organized

Go through the bills and keep track of all of them. After all, it’s easy to get superficial and find yourself in debt because you didn’t pay attention to your personal finances.

Tip 6: Sell unwanted possessions

After divorce, make an inventory of the things you have. Selling stuff that you no longer need via a garage sale or online is a great way to earn some easy money. Just be sure the sale takes place after the assets and properties are divided between spouses.

Tip 7: Understand divorce fees

Never agree to pay a fee that you don’t understand; it’s important to know what you are paying for. The divorce professionals you hire should always keep you informed about the costs and openly talk about the charges. If you have an attorney make sure that you discuss the costs beforehand and that you understand how much the attorney will charge. And if you chose an online website to help with the divorce papers, then discuss the fees with them before commencing any paperwork.

Tip 8: Don’t be emotional

Divorce is never easy; it’s emotionally exhausting and there’s usually a lot of animosity between spouses. So take the emotion out of the divorce and have a civilized discussion with your ex-spouse regarding the division of assets. You can save a lot of money by reaching an agreement on the properties without the aid of an attorney.

Conclusion

Saving money during divorce is complicated. The bottom line is that an uncontested divorce is always cheaper — and one of the very best ways to save money with an uncontested divorce is to get that divorce online.
