Grandfather Says: Strange Dreams

By RD Blakeslee

Original oil painting by: Grandfather’s wife

Grandfather says he supposes everyone has weird dreams from time to time.

For example, last night Grandfather had a cow hitched to a plow and walked her up a ramp. She broke through the ramp and got one leg stuck.

Then Grandfather woke up, rationality set in and he has no idea why he would hitch a cow to a plow, and/or why he would walk her up a ramp that way.

As to whether the cow had plowed any furrows or where the ramp was headed, the dream didn’t say.

I had a weird dream a long time ago which I’ve shared a lot over the years. I was in a diner when a penguin showed up and started eating food off of everybody’s plates. Then the manager rushed over to kill the penguin but I stopped him and paid for everybody’s food. Then I asked the penguin to sit down at my table and we shared a plate of sushi!

Grandfather is glad the penguin didn’t get killed.

As far Grandfather knows, his cow suffered no ill effects either, when her leg got caught in the ramp.

I have a reccurring dream where I am best friends with a cow, a dog, and a catfish. I keep the catfish in a fishbowl, and pull him around in a little red wagon, and we all hang out in the woods. At the end of the day, I always bring the catfish home to his mom, who happens to be a manatee. So I think the catfish is probably adopted.

      Lucky catfish! Somebody cares …

Came here for black coffee and happily found this. I love hearing about crazy dreams.

The craziest dream I ever had was when I was a teenager. There were these kegs of beer chasing me in the house saying “sandy 7, rocky 8” over and over again. Eventually I was able to climb out of my brother’s bedroom window and ran to the police station. I’ve never been able to figure out the meaning of that one.

I’ve heard that eating too much cheese before bed can cause strange dreams. Also, do you dream in color or black and white?

      RD Blakeslee says

I have done a lot of long-distance walking in my life and a some of my dreams apparently reflect that.

Some of those dreams walk me to a far-distant destination through a barren, colorless landscape. Others are in color and the trek is through a landscape with vegetation and one or a few buildings. In all of these dreams there is a something I’m wanting to do at the end, which always fails to materialize.

Hadn’t heard the cheese theory. Maybe blue cheese would produce a blue movie-type dream? *chuckle*

“Ive never been able to figure out the meaning of that one.” – Steve

This morning I did a little research on what our forebears thought about dreams, from ca. 3000 BC through 200 AD (Artemidorus of Ephesus, also called Daldianus, lived in the 2nd century A.D. and wrote the most comprehensive guide to the interpretation of dreams that has survived from antiquity.)

Steve, I think you are in good company: Nobody else has convincingly figured it out , either!

So glad so many are enjoying this series, Carolyn.

A few years ago, I would never have dreamed of such a literary adventure, late in life.

I know how you feel! I, too, continue to discover new talents and adventures occasionally. The most recent: back in September, I was asked to worship-lead our 5:30 service. At my age, 61, my voice is quite deep — it’s precisely in the range of Chris Tomlin, a famous Christian singer, so at least I have plenty of material to draw from and the guys in the band can practice it in the same key as it is on YouTube. LOL
