Last month a woman played the Powerball lottery game with numbers she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdbj7.com\/2024\/05\/24\/woman-wins-50k-powerball-prize-with-fortune-cookie-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found in a fortune cookie<\/a>. Don\u2019t knock it until you tried it, folks &#8211; because five of those numbers came up in that day&#8217;s lottery drawing, netting her a cool $50,000. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s not a multi-million dollar payoff. Even worse, that $50,000 prize is the amount <em><strong>before<\/strong><\/em> taxes &#8211; which means after getting her check, she should have <em><strong>juuust<\/strong><\/em> enough to enjoy three or four meals at her favorite Chinese restaurant. Not today. A new study reveals that a hamburger and fries from a fast food restaurant is now considered &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lendingtree.com\/debt-consolidation\/fast-food-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a luxury<\/a>&#8221; for 78% of Americans. And it\u2019s just not those who are <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id33014-5-clever-ways-to-save-money-on-pet-care-4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggling<\/a> to make ends meet &#8211; even among households earning more than $100,000 annually, 52% say they are eating less fast food. But that has changed; these days Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/homeowners-hit-pause-on-remodels-as-costs-get-just-ridiculous-132147387.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delaying their home renovation<\/a> plans and opting for more affordable options amid high borrowing costs. In fact, Home Depot noted this week that big-ticket transactions exceeding $1000 were down 6.5% compared to the first quarter last year. And Lowe\u2019s reported this week that sales fell 6.2% last quarter as homeowners continue to delay larger discretionary projects. That&#8217;s why the Fed pumped trillions of dollars into the system to prop up the value of financial assets. As a result, the stock markets are now at or near all-time highs &#8211; but <em><strong>who<\/strong><\/em> owns the majority of all stocks? Answer: The wealthiest 10% of all Americans own <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/wealthiest-10-americans-own-93-033623827.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">93% of all the stocks<\/a>. As for the <em><strong>bottom<\/strong><\/em> 50%? Well &#8230; they held just 1% of all stocks in the third quarter of 2023. So &#8230; does anybody <em><strong>else<\/strong><\/em> see a problem here? No? Okay &#8230; then how about here:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GhxqIITtTtU?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, stocks aren\u2019t the only forms of wealth. As for the cause of the economic downturn, Lazar blames the delayed impacts of the Fed&#8217;s interest-rate hikes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-economy-outlook-recession-unemployment-lazar-states-inflation-wealth-spending-2024-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credit drying up<\/a>. With that in mind, nobody would blame your for thinking something big is coming. Then again, I had the exact same feeling after eating <strong><em>here<\/em><\/strong> last night:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aKLW0kQ83qg?controls=0&amp;start=21\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, for those not counting at home, Lazar also pointed out that &#8220;recessions strike an average of 10 quarters after the Fed begins a rate-hike cycle but have arrived up to 16 quarters later. The first hike of this cycle was in March 2022, meaning eight quarters have already elapsed.&#8221; Then again, a recession used to be defined as occurring whenever the economy suffers through two consecutive quarters of negative GDP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/28\/1113649843\/gdp-2q-economy-2022-recession-two-quarters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as it did between January and June 2022<\/a> &#8211; but then officials changed the definition. <em>Voila!<\/em> No more recession. The newest data shows that renters are struggling more financially, while homeowners continue to reap the rewards of refinancing during the pandemic when mortgage rates were at historic lows.
