Without further ado, let&#8217;s get right to this week&#8217;s commentary &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Money can&#8217;t buy love, but it improves your bargaining position.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8211; Christopher Marlowe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Did you see this? Typically, when people are struggling financially, they rein in their spending. However, a new article in <em>Bloomberg<\/em> reports that younger Americans are now coping with their inability to buy a house and save for retirement by splurging on luxury goods. Why? Because they feel their financial futures are doomed no matter what. In fact, a new study finds that 35% of Gen Z and 43% of millennials admit they \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-31\/gen-z-millennials-are-doom-spending-to-cope-with-economic-uncertainty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doom spend<\/a>\u201d to cope with concern about the economy and the world at large. For all Americans, the figure is 27%. The reason? Toxic commercial real estate (CRE) loans on its books. That was followed days later by New York Community Bancorp being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/new-york-community-bancorp-cut-junk-moodys-33-deposits-uninsured\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut to &#8220;junk&#8221; status<\/a> by Moody&#8217;s for being heavily invested in the CRE market. But I&#8217;m sure this is all much ado about nothing. The problem, you see, is that inflation is still stubbornly hanging around. Don&#8217;t believe us? Then ask yourself: Is your grocery bill still rising? Has the bank reduced your credit card rate? Are energy prices back to where they were four\u00a0 years ago? Is the housing market still unaffordable for first-time homebuyers? In short: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/inflation-economy-recession-outlook-fed-rate-cuts-mohamed-el-erian-2024-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Fed is snookered<\/a>. And they know it. How sure <em><strong>are<\/strong><\/em> we about this? Sadly, they dishonestly focused their attention only on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/january-jobs-shocker-payrolls-explode-353k-double-expected-and-higher-all-estimate-wages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the gamed headline number<\/a>. If they bothered to dig a little deeper they\u2019d have concluded that the economy is still adding jobs, but they&#8217;re overwhelmingly lower pay, with fewer hours, and either directly or indirectly paid by government. Yes, it&#8217;s essentially a case of lying by omission. The question is: Will they continue to keep rates elevated in their fight against inflation &#8211; or will they finally back down? And speaking of fight or flight &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xlEfjWxmll0?si=em3gvbN-WhT16iTJ&amp;controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Unfortunately, for us, every dollar the Fed creates out of thin air steals value from every honestly-earned dollar in existence. And they\u2019re going to be creating a lot of them, because the Treasury Department announced that they\u2019ll increase the National Debt by a breathtaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/us-treasury-borrow-760-billion-q1-lower-than-forecast-2024-01-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$760 billion this quarter<\/a> alone &#8211; and then another $202 billion <em><strong>next<\/strong><\/em> quarter. For those of you without a calculator, that\u2019s almost $1 trillion added to the national debt in just six short months. Then again, considering the Treasury always underestimates its spending requirements, that figure will probably be closer to $1.5 trillion. True, that $6 trillion doesn\u2019t increase the National Debt &#8211; but since the old debt is going to be refinanced at a sharply-higher rates than when the bonds were initially issued with near-zero interest. And <em><strong>that<\/strong><\/em> added cost to service the debt <em><strong>will<\/strong><\/em> increase the National Debt. So the long-awaited debt spiral is now well underway. How big would the revaluation be? Based on the current supply of USD, and the percentage of gold to back the currency, estimates range from $10,000 to $100,000. That being said, any overnight gold revaluation &#8211; which, in reality, is a de facto <em><strong>devaluation<\/strong><\/em> of the USD &#8211; will be delayed by the US for as long as possible.
