Five months after unionized UPS workers ratified a massive five-year labor deal that included massive pay bumps that gave many drivers six-figure salaries &#8211; and total compensation for senior drivers upwards of $170,000 annually &#8211; the logistics company announced this week that 12,000 management jobs are going to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/30\/ups-reports-drop-in-package-volume-stock-tumbles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminated<\/a>. The reason: Sliding package demand and soaring union labor costs. Huh. Nobody could see that coming. More to the point, dealers are reporting slower sales and rising inventories on the electric truck, which starts at just under $50,000. Well \u2026 <em>MotorTrend<\/em>\u2019s testing revealed that &#8220;an F-150 Lightning Platinum saddled with a camper that nearly maxed out its 8500-pound towing capacity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/reviews\/ford-f150-lightning-electric-truck-towing-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">couldn&#8217;t even cover 100 miles<\/a>.\u201d Heh. So \u2026 who was it again that thought transitioning from cars that run on petrol to EVs was a good idea? Oh, that\u2019s right \u2026 the folks who continually worry about <em><strong>this<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3P4LUt0qcX8?si=Ic7wvsHHQ5nJmArS&amp;controls=0&amp;start=78;&amp;end=201\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> On a related note, according to the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, \u201cFor many Americans, getting insurance for both their cars and homes has gone from a routine, generally manageable expense to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/insurance-home-auto-rate-increases-climate-change-03b806f3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a do-or-die ordeal<\/a> that can strain household budgets.\u201d To illustrate their point, Allstate increased auto insurance rates an average of 17%,15% and 30% in New Jersey, New York and California, respectively, while regulators in California are still mulling Allstate&#8217;s request for a 40% increase in Golden State home-insurance rates. It also came in well above the highest Wall Street forecast. Now for the punchline: To generate $1 in growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/gdp-number-was-great-there-just-one-huge-problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the budget deficit had to be increased<\/a> by $1.55. Even more astounding, it takes more than $2.50 in new debt to generate $1 of GDP growth. For any slow kids that may be hiding in the back, this means every penny of additional debt acts as an additional <em><strong>drag<\/strong><\/em> on the economy &#8211; <em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em> a tailwind. In other words: After taking into account <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shadowstats.com\/alternate_data\/inflation-charts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <em><strong>actual<\/strong><\/em> inflation rate<\/a>, the US economy has contracted sharply. But I know &#8211; the inflation rate has been falling for more than a year now. Go ask the CFO at your company if they will borrow money just to cover the cost of the interest&#8230; that is a return-on-investment (ROI) of 0%. That&#8217;s why the only answer is to keep interest rates near the zero bound. It isn&#8217;t a good answer, it is the only answer. Any other answer leads to utter disaster. Just look at Japan &#8212; 0% interest rates and slowly decaying standards of living. Then again, those who did their homework already know that. In fact, in 1975 the 20 biggest US companies included consumer goods retailers, oil producers, drug companies, automotive and heavy-equipment manufacturers, and even a manufacturer of bathroom fixtures &#8211; and only one financial company, Citicorp at #17, was on the list. Today, there are three financial companies and four more whose business model is based on little more than selling consumer information. Silver would be worth 337% more (4.4 times).\u201d Unpossible, you say? Well \u2026 the scoreboard doesn\u2019t lie. In essence, it&#8217;s a confidence game. And, unfortunately, it\u2019s going to keep going until the public finally has the courage to say \u201cno.\u201d Behold &#8230; Exhibit A:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CGXzoUf3a9Q?si=6toiNFyXFlGE-A0I&amp;controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The great economist Murray Rothbard concluded that, \u201cOn the free market \u2026 the monetary unit &#8211; the unit of a nation\u2019s accounts &#8211; naturally emerges as a unit of weight of the money commodity; for example, the silver ounce or the gold gram.\u201d Despite the USD\u2019s anchor to gold being broken in 1971, another renowned student of monetary history, macro analyst Jim Grant, notes that the resulting monetary system chaos will ensure that \u201csilver and gold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7RUcQ9a-YzA&amp;t=2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will be money again<\/a>.\u201d At least eventually. Those who are holding it when that time comes will be glad they did.
