And with that, let&#8217;s get right to this week&#8217;s commentary, shall we?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>For gold is tried in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8211; George Santayana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Did you see this? The final home sales figures for 2023 are in and they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/19\/december-home-sales-slump-to-close-out-worst-year-since-1995.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the lowest since 1995<\/a>. In fact, barely 4 million housing units were sold last year &#8211; a result of higher interest rates, diminishing personal incomes due to the effects of inflation, and affordability of homes. And first-time buyers are still struggling; they made up just 29% of December sales. Historically they make up 40% of the market. Even realtors know that is <em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em> the sign of a healthy market. However, Americans who have a postgraduate degree and an annual income of more than $150,000, <a href=\"https:\/\/committeetounleashprosperity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Them-vs-Us_CTUP-Rasmussen-Study-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">74%<\/a> say their finances are getting better. In fact, one of those financially fortunate survey takers was recently caught on tape:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XkAWhcus3dg?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> First-time homebuyers aren\u2019t the only ones who are feeling the pinch. According to the always-optimistic bureaucrats who crunch numbers at the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the US will add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/59159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another $20 trillion<\/a> to the National Debt through 2033. In reality, the number will be far larger. In fact, the program loses so much money now that its trust fund is shrinking rapidly, and Social Security projects it will fully be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/11\/social-securitys-trust-funds-are-running-dry-heres-what-to-know.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depleted by 2033<\/a>. Uh oh. And speaking of \u201cuh oh\u201d moments &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QrxPuk0JefA?si=NbAtb7Bp5SgkH7Vp&amp;controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, as macro analyst Simon Black points out, &#8220;One of the many, many reasons (the trust fund deficit) is so important is because Social Security will no longer be a <em><strong>buyer<\/strong><\/em> of US government bonds; it will be a <em><strong>seller<\/strong><\/em>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sovereignman.com\/trends\/breaking-down-the-coming-20-trillion-debt-tsunami-148646\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that\u2019s a big deal<\/a> because for the past 90 years, Social Security always invested its annual surplus into government bonds, which essentially gave politicians an extra pile of cash each year to spend. So who is going to buy all this new debt?\u201d Short answer: The Fed, with currency conjured out of thin air. Of course, that $4 trillion in new money also helped create the highest inflation in <em><strong>four decades<\/strong><\/em>. This is exponential growth, increasing at an increasing rate &#8211; also known as a train wreck &#8211; because in real life it cannot be sustained. Merely paying interest on the debt already takes more than 37% of total tax receipts. What happens when those interest payments take 50% of receipts? The USD and the present system of the Fed monetizing debt simply cannot survive.\u201d Very true, Mr. Sanders; very true. How does interest get paid &#8211; not to mention the principal &#8211; without printing the funds to do so? Can you say banana republic with no possible way out?\u201d That, too, is a good question. That being said, every spendthrift government using a fiat monetary system ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicshelp.org\/blog\/3015\/economics\/why-inflation-makes-it-easier-for-government-to-pay-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>needs<\/strong><\/em> inflation<\/a> to avoid &#8220;going broke. &#8221; So that&#8217;s the path they choose &#8211; even though it leads to sharply lower living standard via monetary debasement for the citizenry.
