The price of the average new-vehicle is a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/the-ascent\/personal-finance\/articles\/average-new-car-prices-hit-record-high-of-nearly-50000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$49,507<\/a>, which may suggest that borrowers could be getting in over their heads. This is backed up by the fact that almost 16% of consumers who financed a new car in the last quarter of 2022 have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-05\/car-owners-strain-as-more-loan-payments-soar-to-1-000-a-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">monthly payments reaching $1000<\/a> &#8211; that&#8217;s up from 10.5% in 2021 and just 6.7% in the 2020. In case you haven&#8217; guessed, <em><strong>that&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em> an all-time record too. In fact, consumers with financed vehicles are so far behind that the percentage of borrowers at least 60 days late on their car payments is higher today than it was during the peak of the Great Recession in 2009. Which is hard to believe, considering that the economy is not in a recession. The (US dollar) is a monster typical of the virtual world. Backed by nothing &#8230; it hath no substantial material existence, but dwelleth as electrons in a computer &#8211; I pass by for a moment the rapidly disappearing cash evidences of dollars; a vestige of ages past like your appendix.&#8221; True. (But) the virtual world and its virtual dollar are <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/the-accelerating-countdown-to-armageddon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drawing nigh to the end<\/a> of their virtual lives as the social and economic pendulum swings towards real things &#8211; the wealth of the world that men take out of the ground. The virtual dollar will pass away as a dream at breaking day; a cobweb brushed aside by gold, oil, and real commodities. Better get ready to roll up your sleeves and get calluses.&#8221; Uh huh. Never mind that &#8220;the Dixie&#8221; compares the fiat USD to other dying fiat currencies; that is, the best looking horse in the glue factory. But as macro analyst Matthew Piepenburg notes, &#8220;Whether the DXY rises or falls in the near-term, the end result is as inevitable and mathematical as Germany&#8217;s two-front war, Pickett&#8217;s charge or Napoleon&#8217;s Waterloo: Disaster. The answer is: They demand <em><strong>real<\/strong><\/em> money in the form of gold or silver. And if you don&#8217;t believe me, just ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-10-20\/venezuelans-break-off-flakes-of-gold-to-pay-for-meals-haircuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venezuelan small-business owners<\/a> who are still demanding payment in precious metals today &#8211; or any Zimbabwean who experienced that African nation&#8217;s most recent currency crisis in 2008:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sN3iITo7gNA?start=0&amp;end=86&amp;autoplay=0 title=\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> In 1900, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gold_standard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold standard<\/a> and freely-circulating specie in place, the average price of a high-end men&#8217;s suit was $35. Back then, a gold $20 US Double Eagle officially set the price of the yellow metal at $20.67 per ounce. That means it took 1.7 ounces of gold to buy a high-end suit. Today, with the average price of a high-end suit at $2000, it costs approximately 1.1 ounces of gold. Yes, it&#8217;s quite a trick. Then again, that huge run-up in the fiat-dollar price wouldn&#8217;t have been possible if the US hadn&#8217;t decided to &#8220;temporarily&#8221; break the dollar&#8217;s anchor to gold in 1971. But it did &#8211; so here we are. But priced in US dollars, a high-end men&#8217;s suit has <a href=\"https:\/\/schiffgold.com\/commentaries\/does-gold-really-preserve-purchasing-power-the-case-of-the-high-end-suit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>increased<\/strong><\/em> by 5600%<\/a>.&#8221; That disparity is the inevitable result of federal politicians stealing countless productivity gains via five decades of deficit spending. It&#8217;s infuriating to be sure. But on the plus side, big-screen TVs and other consumer electronics are still cheap. Indeed, the gold standard returns protections to savers that are lost with fiat currency. How? By preventing the involuntary lending by savers, who are deprived in the process of some of the value of their savings. Er &#8230; assuming they&#8217;d make the right decision if given a choice:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D-Pycw41wws?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Back in 1995, economist Bettina Bien Greaves remarked that under &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/how-to-return-to-the-gold-standard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the gold standard<\/a>, banks would return to their original functions: serving as money warehouses and as money lenders &#8230; (where) the transfer of funds and money clearings could take place as rapidly and smoothly as they do now &#8211; but minus inflation, price distortions, economic miscalculations, and malinvestments.&#8221; It would also allow put a yoke on spendthrift politicians, and ensure reckless commercial banks could always be held accountable via bank runs. Which is why governments hate the gold standard &#8211; and are feverishly pushing a &#8220;better&#8221; solution. For <em><strong>them<\/strong><\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-77360\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Tweet-3-1024x960.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Tweet-3-1024x960.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Tweet-3-300x281.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Tweet-3-768x720.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Tweet-3.png 1218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The bottom line is that a gold-based monetary system that includes circulating gold specie in the economy would benefit the public by preventing politicians from stealing productivity gains to expand the government. This would result in a gradual lowering of consumer prices over time. Perhaps even more importantly, it would provide a safe long-term store of value for savers with zero counterparty risk.
