Since 2020, Americans&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/video\/personal-savings-americans-plunged-shockingly-161500140.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">personal savings have plunged<\/a> almost 90% from $4.85 trillion to just $626 billion. That is an astounding figure and one that dovetails with additional data that shows rising credit card debt over the same period. And the number of holiday shoppers is noticeably less from previous years. In fact, shopping mall parking lots are nearly empty in most places. Then again, when you consider it costs twice as much to fill up your tank than it did two years ago, or that grocery bills are up 50% for many people, I guess the lack of holiday shoppers fighting to save a few hundred bucks on a big screen TV really shouldn&#8217;t be so surprising. And neither should this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-75952\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-1-825x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-1-825x1024.png 825w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-1-242x300.png 242w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-1-768x953.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-1.png 1220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of high grocery bills, California&#8217;s participation in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program hit <a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/nation\/states\/center-square\/california-food-stamp-costs-reach-record-highs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an all-time high<\/a> in July at 4.9 million people as of July. Today, almost 1 in 6 Californians are still on the program. What is more confusing is that the last time food stamp participation was this high, the Golden State&#8217;s unemployment rate was over 16%. Currently, it&#8217;s at 3.8% &#8211; that&#8217;s the lowest level since at least 1976. Very strange. Then again, we don&#8217;t need <em><strong>this<\/strong><\/em> guy to tell us those numbers don&#8217;t add up:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YGFi-XswpoI?start=49&amp;end=230&amp;autoplay=0 title=\u201c frameborder=\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> One thing is certain: The floundering economy is no surprise to both FedEx corporate officers <em><strong>and<\/strong><\/em> Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. After all, it was just two weeks ago that Bezos suggested that households would be smart to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/black-friday-surprise-jeff-bezos-tells-people-not-to-buy-cars-refrigerators-and-other-big-ticket-items-critics-call-him-out-11668710638\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">avoid buying big ticket items<\/a> at this time because the economy was going to face tough sledding in 2023, while FedEx actually made the ironic move of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/fedexs-freight-unit-furlough-workers-2022-11-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laying off workers<\/a> ahead of the holidays instead of increasing them. The question is: How bad do things have to get before the Fed abandons its fight against inflation and caves in to pressure from both Wall and Main Streets by lowering interest rates? That being said, he notes that the damage is also beneficial; in this instance, it&#8217;s beginning to &#8220;correct the mistakes of over two decades of <a href=\"https:\/\/economicprism.com\/gold-shines-bright\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain damaged monetary policy<\/a>.&#8221; Uh huh. Which is why the Fed still has miles to go before it sleeps. Rising interest rates have made parking money in Treasuries a possible option. Five percent (on a 1-year Treasury bill) will still result in a real inflation adjusted loss. Nonetheless, at the end of the year duration you get your entire principle back, plus the 5 percent.&#8221; How times have changed. Well &#8230; in addition to an inflation crisis which is already here, Malinen says, &#8220;this crisis is likely to also include: a financial crash; a banking crisis; a sovereign debt crisis; a corporate debt crisis; and a currency crisis.&#8221; As you can see, Tuomas is famous for his calm, even-keeled and understated opinions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-75978\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-7-1024x890.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-7-1024x890.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-7-300x261.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-7-768x667.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tweet-7.png 1222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Frankly, Malinen may be on to something, as more than 2 in 5 small business owners in the US say they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/report-41-of-small-businesses-cant-pay-rent-this-month\/article_a2309fd6-6b6b-11ed-8c8b-07599be3c8c5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">couldn&#8217;t pay the rent<\/a> on time for the month of November &#8211; that includes 57% of beauty salons, 45% of gyms, 44% of retail and 44% of restaurants. Yikes. As for those of you looking for potential explanations as to why so many people are suddenly having trouble paying their landlords, well &#8230; <em><strong>this<\/strong><\/em> might be one reason:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E7KQwBWJ7i0?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_end\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, the fallout from the failure of Sam Bankman-Fried&#8217;s FTX crypto exchange continues. But it&#8217;s important to keep in mind that our fiat currency deposits in even the largest <em><strong>regulated<\/strong><\/em> banks aren&#8217;t as secure as many believe. In fact, they&#8217;re subject to the same run on deposits that crypto depositors are with any of these large crypto exchanges. Kim reminds us, &#8220;people equate &#8216;regulated&#8217; with safety &#8211; which is quite na\u00efve given the fact that &#8216;regulated&#8217; Cyprus banks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2022-11-25\/no-bank-account-safe-2023-traditional-or-otherwise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stole more than half the money<\/a> deposited in their banks in 2013. If a traditional bank account is really a thousand times safer than a crypto exchange account, (then) no bank customer should ever have a problem withdrawing 50%, let alone 10% of their entire account amount on any given day, completely unannounced.&#8221; Very true. These days, most banks seem to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/faq-what-are-the-withdrawal-limits-for-savings-accounts-4589981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">choke on modest requests<\/a> of even $5000.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-75980\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-1-1024x993.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-1-1024x993.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-1-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-1-768x744.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-1.png 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Here&#8217;s the bottom line: As soon as you deposit any money into a bank account, that money is technically <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id64891-the-big-secret-the-banking-industry-doesnt-want-you-to-know.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no longer yours<\/a> because it&#8217;s an unsecured loan to your depository. Of course, the bank will tell you to relax because you can call in that unsecured loan at <em><strong>any<\/strong><\/em> time. So sleep well tonight.
