Without further ado, let&#8217;s get right to this week&#8217;s commentary &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The view was generally held that centralization of banking would inevitably result in one of two alternatives: either complete government control, which meant politics in banking, or control by Wall Street, which meant banking in politics.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Paul Warburg, 1930<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Did you see this? A week after warning of a &#8220;stormy&#8221; banking environment, JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon has updated his assessment as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/kingworldnews.com\/gold-silver-and-the-coming-financial-hurricane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hurricane force<\/a>.&#8221; Macroeconomist Alasdair Macleod observed that, &#8220;The signal is clear: JPMorgan will contract its balance sheet, and where <em><strong>it<\/strong> <\/em>goes, so goes all the other global systemically important banks because when fear takes over, banks withdraw credit from the economy.&#8221; They always do. Unfortunately, as Macleod points out, whenever the banks stop lending, &#8220;a financial and banking crisis <em><strong>always<\/strong><\/em> follows.&#8221; Time to batten down the hatches, folks. Especially if you&#8217;re in the market for a new car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73339\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-10-1024x614.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-10-1024x614.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-10-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-10-768x461.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-10.png 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, the latest Social Security (SS) Trustee report is calling for another crisis, warning that the program will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/OACT\/TR\/2022\/tr2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insolvent by 2035<\/a>. At that point, every beneficiary will face an across-the-board benefits cut of 20%. And if that&#8217;s not bad enough, the Medicare Hospital Insurance (HI) trust fund will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/2022-medicare-trustees-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exhaust its reserves<\/a> by 2028. <em><strong>That<\/strong><\/em> will require HI spending to be reduced by 10% &#8211; and then 20% in 2046. Surprised? You shouldn&#8217;t be. Fortunately, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/08\/research-good-life-happy-meaningful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some good news<\/a> too:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73342\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-11-814x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-11-814x1024.png 814w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-11-238x300.png 238w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-11-768x966.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-11-1221x1536.png 1221w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-11.png 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Social Security&#8217;s big flaw is it&#8217;s a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/ask\/answers\/110614\/how-social-security-trust-fund-invested.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pay-as-you-go<\/a>&#8221; system that uses taxes on current workers to pay for the benefits owed to retirees. As long as demographics remain relatively stable this works just fine as a pension scheme &#8211; which is why the payroll tax that funds SS had no trouble covering the benefits. But with a rapidly increasing number of Baby Boomers now joining the growing ranks of SS beneficiaries, the demographics are no longer favorable. As a result, SS payroll taxes have been unable to cover 100% of the program&#8217;s benefit obligations since 2021, which forces SS to dip into its reserves each year to cover the deficit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73344\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-12-884x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-12-884x1024.png 884w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-12-259x300.png 259w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-12-768x890.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-12.png 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> On a related note, Social Security recipients&#8217; purchasing power has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/inflation-eroding-social-security-purchasing-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declined 40%<\/a> since 2000. In fact, in order to maintain the same purchasing power as there was 22 years ago, the program would have to increase benefits by $540 per month. Heh. With that mind, it makes one wonder if it even matters if the fund will be insolvent less than a decade from now. I mean, Social Security <em><strong>is<\/strong><\/em> fixable; and there are <em><strong>plenty<\/strong><\/em> of intelligent inspirational people out there who are capable of making it a more stable and viable program. It&#8217;s just that almost all of them seem to be helping others solve science problems <em><strong>outside<\/strong><\/em> the field of economics:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/77ZF50ve6rs?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, &#8220;declining purchasing power&#8221; is just another way of saying &#8220;falling living standard&#8221; &#8211; and one of the clearest examples of Americans&#8217; falling living standard is the <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalcalculations.blogspot.com\/2022\/06\/mortgage-payments-for-median-new-homes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raw affordability of new homes<\/a>, which hit an all-time low this month. In fact, the median household income in April was just 17.4% of the value of the median new home sold during the month. See for yourself:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73311\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/home-affordability-1024x746.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"541\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/home-affordability-1024x746.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/home-affordability-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/home-affordability-768x560.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/home-affordability-1536x1120.png 1536w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/home-affordability.png 1830w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 541px) 100vw, 541px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Not coincidentally, last week, Crescat Capital&#8217;s macro analyst Tavi Costa noted that, &#8220;After years of money printing and interest rate suppression, policy makers have created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crescat.net\/may-research-letter-too-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historic speculative environment<\/a> in financial assets. But now, the inflation genie is out of the bottle, and to restore its credibility, the Fed has no choice but to burst the bubble.&#8221; Now &#8230; you&#8217;d be forgiven for thinking that these insane policy makers have absolutely no idea what they&#8217;re doing &#8211; but, ironically, they really do. Unlike <em><strong>these<\/strong><\/em> guys:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nNn5Ynb_h5U?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of clueless policy makers, Congress received a letter from the banking industry this week, warning of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/wallstreetonparade.com\/2022\/05\/credit-unions-and-banking-groups-warn-of-devastating-consequences-of-a-u-s-central-bank-digital-currency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">devastating consequences<\/a>&#8221; if the Fed issues a central bank digital currency (CBDC). In fact, the letter warned that a US CBDC would shift a significant &#8220;volume of private money to public money by moving it from banks into accounts at the Fed where the funds can&#8217;t be lent back into the economy. These accounts represent 71% of bank funding today. Losing this would undermine the banking business model.&#8221; Unfortunately for private banks and credit unions, the Big Government pols in Congress and the DC bureaucrats don&#8217;t care.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73351\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/meme-man-vs-state-1024x670.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/meme-man-vs-state-1024x670.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/meme-man-vs-state-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/meme-man-vs-state-768x502.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/meme-man-vs-state-1536x1004.png 1536w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/meme-man-vs-state-2048x1339.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The bankers&#8217; letter goes on to torpedo a key argument in favor of CBDCs, noting that, &#8220;Contrary to the assertions of some proponents, a US CBDC is not necessary to &#8216;digitize the dollar,&#8217; as the dollar functions primarily in digital form today. Commercial bank money is a digital dollar, and is currently accepted without question by businesses and consumers as a means of payment.&#8221; Then again, their point becomes moot after you realize the <em><strong>real<\/strong><\/em> purpose of CBDCs is to perpetuate and expand the state&#8217;s grip on its <a href=\"https:\/\/mises.org\/library\/our-money-based-debt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraudulent debt-based monetary system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73335\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-9-720x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"538\" height=\"765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-9-720x1024.png 720w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-9-211x300.png 211w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-9-768x1092.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-9-1080x1536.png 1080w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Untitled-9.png 1316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The bottom line is that, it has been 50 years since the US dollar was decoupled from gold so that it could be printed without regard to economic reality. And we&#8217;re finally at the point where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/economics\/absurd-market-hypothesis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">price discovery is dead<\/a> and, as a result, almost every market is hopelessly broken. In fact, there are now <em><strong>so<\/strong><\/em> many dollars floating around that they are being treated by many as if they had little value at all. This is reflected not only by the Fed, which is holding interest rates near zero despite soaring inflation, but also by a growing army of highly-speculative investors in everything from over-priced homes to cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Just ask Austria; a plan conceived by their central bank in 2015 to move 50 tonnes of their monetary gold from London to Switzerland has <em><strong>still<\/strong><\/em> not been realized seven years later. Huh? Could it be that the Bank of England hasn&#8217;t repatriated Austria&#8217;s gold because <em><strong>they no longer have it?<\/strong><\/em> Heh. Is the Pope Catholic? Ultimately, this is the only reason why every national treasury or central bank in the world stores gold in its vault. Likewise, you should be your <em><strong>own<\/strong><\/em> central bank by keeping a small percentage of your net worth, excluding home equity, in the form of physical gold and\/or silver. Just don&#8217;t make the same mistake as Austria. Here were some of the key findings:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">65%<\/span><\/strong><\/span> The percentage of respondents who said they feel that home improvement TV shows set unrealistic expectations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>58%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The share of respondents who felt that, despite those unrealistic expectations, watching home improvement shows has made them a more educated homeowner, buyer, or renovator.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>47%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The percentage of respondents who said home improvement shows inspired admiration.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>27%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The percentage of respondents who said home improvement shows made them jealous.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">50%<\/span><\/strong><\/span> The share of respondents who said they completed their own DIY home project after seeing it on a home improvement TV show.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>57%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Of the respondents who completed a DIY home project they saw on television, the percentage who said it turned out just the way they had hoped.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>7%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The percentage of respondents who said they did a DIY home renovation that was so bad, they had to hire a pro to fix what they&#8217;d messed up.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.angi.com\/articles\/real-remodeling-isnt-reality-tv.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angi.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Useless News: Drugstore Shoppers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two young boys walked into a drug store one day, picked up a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.<\/p>\n<p>The pharmacist at the counter asked the older boy, &#8220;Son, how old are you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eight,&#8221; the boy replied.<\/p>\n<p>The man continued, &#8220;Do you know what these are used for?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The boy replied, &#8220;Not exactly, but they aren&#8217;t for me; they&#8217;re for him. He&#8217;s my brother; he&#8217;s four.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, really?&#8221; the pharmacist replied with a grin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; the boy said. &#8220;We saw on TV that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike.
