For those counting at home, the January <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/us-producer-prices-surge-97-year-ago-82899605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PPI increased 1%<\/a>, which was double Wall Street&#8217;s estimate of 0.5%. Over the past 12 months the gauge rose an unadjusted 9.7% &#8211; that&#8217;s just a hair under the all-time high. And to illustrate that point, a record 60% of surveyed corporations say they&#8217;ve already raised prices over the past three months, while another 45% say they plan to raise prices by April 30th. Both of <em><strong>those<\/strong><\/em> figures are <a href=\"https:\/\/kingworldnews.com\/look-at-who-just-warned-investors-own-as-much-gold-as-you-can\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the highest since 1975<\/a>, which also happens to be the very first year of this survey. Cumulatively, the average American household paid about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartland.org\/publications-resources\/publications\/biden-energy-policies-cost-us-households-more-than-1000-in-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1000 more in energy costs<\/a> in 2021 compared to 2020. Now here&#8217;s the kicker: Because energy is such an important commodity, those higher prices are now baked into the costs of virtually <em><strong>all<\/strong><\/em> goods and services bought and sold in the economy which, in turn, contributes to across-the-board inflation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-71314\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-1-802x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-1-802x1024.png 802w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-1-235x300.png 235w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-1-768x981.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-1-1203x1536.png 1203w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-1.png 1226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Inflation also provides a misleading boost to the nominal GDP figure that is reported by the government on a quarterly basis, which is why macroeconomist Alasdair Macleod noted this week that politicians and central bankers point &#8220;to GDP growth as a primary measure of economic performance; but this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmoney.com\/research\/goldmoney-insights\/difference-between-growth-and-progress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confuses growth with progress<\/a>, where quality of life is the driving factor.&#8221; Macleod goes on to say that using GDP to measure economic health is folly because, mathematically, GDP <em><strong>actually<\/strong><\/em> measures the quantity of currency in circulation. In other words: It&#8217;s a deceptive statistic that helps the Fed make the case for <em><strong>this<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9cQgQIMlwWw?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of circulating currency, if growth in the &#8220;money&#8221; supply closely tracked a concomitant growth in products and services, then GDP growth <em><strong>would<\/strong><\/em> be a fair measure of economic health. Needless to say, most of the money supply growth over the past decade &#8211; as well as the current bout of raging inflation &#8211; has been the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/inflation-producer-prices-51644937170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">printing money out of thin air<\/a>. Imagine that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-71378\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-4-690x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"538\" height=\"798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-4-690x1024.png 690w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-4-202x300.png 202w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-4-768x1140.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-4-1035x1536.png 1035w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-4.png 1222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The truth is, many so-called &#8220;experts&#8221; who conflate GDP with economic progress will also insist that an expanding economy requires rising prices. However, that&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/06\/05\/business\/economic-scene-deal-with-deflation-that-depends-what-causing-prices-fall.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a ludicrous assertion<\/a>; for example, between the end of the US Civil War and the inception of the Fed in 1913, Americans enjoyed more than 40 years of economic expansion with mild <em><strong>deflation<\/strong><\/em> under the gold standard &#8211; which increased the purchasing power of <em><strong>everybody&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em> long-term savings. Sadly, after more than 50 years of unfettered fiat currency printing, and with inflation now raging, it appears the chickens are finally coming home to roost.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> It&#8217;s no coincidence that America&#8217;s transition from a manufacturing powerhouse to an economy dependent on financial services kicked off with the birth of the fiat dollar. But as Charles Hugh Smith explains, it was a detrimental transformation because &#8220;financialization doesn&#8217;t create value by producing goods and services, but by <a href=\"http:\/\/charleshughsmith.blogspot.com\/2022\/02\/the-cost-of-financialization.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploiting credit and leverage<\/a> to reap big money.&#8221; Over time, Smith says those easy profits made it woefully apparent that, in today&#8217;s world, &#8220;producing goods and services that create jobs is for losers.&#8221; Yes; yet <em><strong>another<\/strong><\/em> good reason why there&#8217;s a labor shortage. But not to worry &#8230; the Fed is on it:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-71336\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-3-1024x1022.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"538\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-3-1024x1022.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-3-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-3-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-3-768x767.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/tweet-19Feb2022-3.png 1222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, for those who excuse the offshoring of our manufacturing base because it led to an influx of less-expensive imports, Smith says: &#8220;Well-paid shills tally up all the &#8216;savings&#8217; generated by crapification [<em>sic<\/em>], but they ignore the immense losses in utility and durability. A $500 appliance that lasts 20 years without any repair is far less expensive than a $400 appliance that fails in four years and can&#8217;t be repaired, or the repair costs almost as much as a new appliance. Hapless consumers of crapified [<em>sic<\/em>] goods end up paying more for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naplesnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/communities\/collier-citizen\/2016\/04\/06\/down-to-business-the-bitterness-of-poor-quality-remains-long-after-the-sweetness-of-low-price\/85885020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poorly-made junk<\/a> that falls apart or fails as cheap electronic components blink off.&#8221; Yes; and in more ways than one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, by shipping good-paying manufacturing jobs overseas in exchange for slightly lower prices, the United States sold its economic soul to the devil. Ever since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreservehistory.org\/essays\/gold-convertibility-ends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dollar&#8217;s anchor to gold was broken<\/a> in 1971, the US has not only been losing high-quality American-made consumer goods but &#8211; more importantly &#8211; the high-paying jobs that came with them and provided a higher standard of living for its citizens. Unbelievably, it&#8217;s a problem the US proceeded to make even <em><strong>worse<\/strong><\/em> with the passage of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_Free_Trade_Agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAFTA<\/a> in 1993. But, hey &#8230; it&#8217;s not as if we weren&#8217;t warned:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9cif5UdJVRs?start=52&amp;end=265&amp;autoplay=0 title=\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Today, there are no longer enough good high-paying jobs to provide the entire US population with the same standard of living it had in 1971 &#8211; which is why people are demanding &#8220;a living wage&#8221; for low-skilled entry level jobs that in better times were never intended to be a career, let alone support a family. Even so, the American economy has become so atrophied that many people today argue with no hint of irony that the lower-cost low-quality imported goods the US enjoys are a godsend due to the lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/btn\/volume-9\/forty-years-of-falling-manufacturing-employment.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-paying manufacturing jobs<\/a>. Well &#8230; at least until the supply chains break.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the 50 industries with the most employees, here are the ten where wages are currently growing the fastest, relative to their employment opportunities. She noticed a young man in his early 20s sitting in a nearby seat who kept grinning at her. Since that made her uncomfortable, she decided to move to another seat &#8211; but as she sat down a second time, she noticed the man&#8217;s grin turned into a big smile.<\/p>\n<p>So she moved again. Unfortunately, despite changing seats, the pregnant lady saw that the man just kept smiling at her &#8211; only now he seemed even <strong><em>more<\/em><\/strong> amused.<\/p>\n<p>She then got up and changed seats for a <em><strong>third<\/strong><\/em> time. However, this time the man broke into a bout of uncontrollable laughter!<\/p>\n<p>Well &#8230; by now the pregnant lady had had enough, so she complained to the bus driver, who had the annoying man arrested.<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, the case came up in court. After hearing the lady&#8217;s story, the judge asked the man if he had anything to say for himself.<\/p>\n<p>The man replied, &#8220;Well, your Honor, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, I couldn&#8217;t help but notice her condition. Then I looked up and noticed that she had sat under a chewing gum sign that said: &#8216;THE DOUBLE-MINT TWINS ARE COMING&#8217; &#8230; that made me grin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then the lady moved and sat under a different sign.
