Warren Buffett&#8217;s Berkshire Hathaway unloaded more than a quarter of its stake in Wells Fargo &#8212; and 61% of its position in JP Morgan Chase &#8212; while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining-technology.com\/news\/berkshire-hathaway-buys-stake-barrick-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquiring a new position<\/a> in the largest gold miner in the world, Barrick Gold. That&#8217;s right; he&#8217;s dumping banks for gold mines. Or, to put it another way: hell has officially frozen over.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It&#8217;s hilarious that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Buffett?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Buffett<\/a> who always said that Gold doesn&#8217;t produce anything now buys a big producer of stuff that doesn&#8217;t produce anything. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/barrickgold?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#barrickgold<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GOLD?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GOLD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Daniel vd Berg (@danielvdberg1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danielvdberg1\/status\/1294537851376406528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 15, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Buffett&#8217;s move into the yellow metal had macroeconomic guru Bill Holter asking a few questions: &#8220;Does this mean he no longer believes gold to be a &#8216;pet rock&#8217;? Can it be he finally sees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsmineset.com\/2020\/08\/14\/in-the-news-today-3487\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how bankrupt the US has become<\/a>? Does he finally see the credit risk of paper assets? Did someone show him that gold has increased roughly eight-fold in dollar terms since 2000 &#8212; and done so with zero credit risk? Welcome to the party, but what took you so long?&#8221; Indeed, Bill. Indeed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Not surprisingly, fellow macroeconomist Alasdair Macleod concurs with Holter. &#8220;In these bizarre markets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmoney.com\/research\/goldmoney-insights\/an-unexpected-systemic-crisis-is-for-sure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the elephant in the room<\/a> is systemic risk &#8212; visible to all, but ignored (because) everyone in government, central banking, and the mainstream media, believe our economic problems are due to COVID-19; so when the pandemic is over normality will return. But that&#8217;s a conjurer&#8217;s distraction.&#8221; Why? Well &#8230; because when the pandemic ends, the debt will remain.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, signs of this systemic risk are everywhere. In fact, Macleod warns that highly leveraged Eurozone and Chinese commercial banks officially classified as &#8220;systemically important&#8221; are facing the prospects of soaring bad debts. Unfortunately, their <a href=\"https:\/\/bluenotes.anz.com\/posts\/2020\/08\/anz-treasury-capital-banking-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asset-value-to-market-cap ratios<\/a> strongly suggest investors know the banking system will be unable to cope with the deteriorating economies as time goes on. Uh huh. Speaking of not coping &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FTDA_VUlRnM?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Needless to say, the risks extend beyond the banking system. A new survey via online rental platform, Apartment List, found 32% of renters and homeowners entered August with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apartmentlist.com\/research\/august-housing-payments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unpaid housing bills<\/a>. At least 20% of respondents owed more than $1000. Among renters with back rent due, 49% have renegotiated lease agreements with their landlords or are doing so.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62604\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/unpaid-housing-bills.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/unpaid-housing-bills.png 800w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/unpaid-housing-bills-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/unpaid-housing-bills-768x425.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Then there&#8217;s this: As of August 9th, 424 US companies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/us-bankruptcies-on-track-to-hit-10-year-high-as-pandemic-rages-on-59745245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed for bankruptcy<\/a> this year; that exceeds the number of bankruptcy filing for any comparable period since 2010. Never mind the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2020\/06\/20\/more-than-100000-small-businesses-have-closed-sinc.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 100,000 small businesses<\/a> that have been forced to permanently close their doors due to the pandemic. The good news is: It&#8217;s impossible to have a V-recovery without first experiencing massive carnage to the economy. So there&#8217;s that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, despite the continuing bad economic news on Main Street, stocks continue to soar near all-time highs. As asset manager Egon VonGreyerz notes, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/kingworldnews.com\/greyerz-the-truth-about-warren-buffetts-investment-in-gold-and-the-real-reason-why-he-did-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The biggest miracle<\/a> currently is the stock market. After the March collapse, we&#8217;ve seen a rally that defies reality; a total disconnect with economic facts, based on a combination of hope and worthless printed money.&#8221; In other words: Let&#8217;s all pray that the Fed has a Plan B.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, the incompetent Fed only has <strong><em>one<\/em><\/strong> plan. As MN Gordon notes: &#8220;The Fed, through willful cleverness, <a href=\"https:\/\/economicprism.com\/what-you-will-find-when-you-follow-the-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">painted itself into a corner<\/a> over several decades; there&#8217;s no escape. So the Fed will keep doing more of what it does. More money printing. More dollar debasement. More economic destruction.&#8221; Very true. Not to mention more of what central bankers do best of all &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6CGyASDjE-U?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, central banks around the world will continue to downplay the importance of the yellow metal because, as Dave Kranzler points out, &#8220;Gold is the kryptonite of fiat currency and the fractional banking system. <a href=\"https:\/\/investmentresearchdynamics.com\/why-fed-bugs-really-hate-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It&#8217;s sunshine to the vampires<\/a> who control the money supply and conjure fairy tales which purport the ability to control the laws of economics through modern monetary policy tools.&#8221; Yes; which is why they hate silver (crosses) too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Central bankers hope that, after more than a decade, their unfettered money printing campaigns will one day make the massive global debt problem magically disappear. But that&#8217;s insanity; all that does is <a href=\"https:\/\/morningporridge.com\/the-morning-porridge\/f\/blain%E2%80%99s-morning-porridge-aug-20-2020-covid-today-debt-tomorrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keep zombie companies solvent<\/a> and misprice assets into the stratosphere. Eventually, inflation <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong> make the worldwide debt problem &#8220;go away&#8221; &#8212; but only because the most basic of all economic laws still applies: there&#8217;s no such thing as a free lunch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Question of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><code>[poll id=\"335\"]<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is the average gasoline mileage of your primary car?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20 to 30 mpg (71%)<\/li>\n<li>Less than 20 mpg (19%)<\/li>\n<li>More than 30 mpg (11%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 2100 Len Penzo dot Com readers responded to last week&#8217;s question and it turns out that just 1 in 9 currently drive a car that averages more than 30 miles per gallon.
