Meanwhile, for the suits on Wall Street, there&#8217;s plenty of money being made &#8212; whether it&#8217;s legitimate or not.<\/p>\n<p>And with that, let&#8217;s get to this week&#8217;s financial commentary &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Perhaps it is better to wake up after all, even to suffer, rather than to remain a dupe to illusions all one&#8217;s life.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Kate Chopin<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>It&#8217;s coming. Something frightful, like a kitchen dragging a village behind it.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Gabriel Garcia Marquez, <em>One Hundred Years of Solitude <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Did you see this? As of this April, a record 32 million American adults were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/25\/realestate\/more-adults-than-ever-live-with-parents-or-grandparents.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">living with their parents or grandparents<\/a>, according to the US Census Bureau &#8212; that&#8217;s an increase of almost 10% from a year ago. Perhaps even more shocking, it&#8217;s also approximately 1 in every 4 households in the United States. Does that officially mean the Boomers are the last generation to be better off than their parents?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Sadly, American entrepreneurs are struggling too. The Fed&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/georgecalhoun\/2020\/07\/06\/the-fed-doesnt-just-print-money-it-also-prints-alpha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free-money spigot<\/a> that&#8217;s been flooding the market for more than a decade has led to a gross misallocation of capital into speculative &#8212; rather than productive &#8212; investments. As a result, the growing debt is being increasingly spent on unproductive businesses &#8212; while obligations outpace revenue at an exponentially increasing rate. But the Fed train keeps rolling on anyway. Well, until &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ctX9Mpu5fiE?controls=0&amp;start=80;end=150\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The Fed&#8217;s toxic monetary policy is why the dollar has <a href=\"https:\/\/goldsilver.com\/blog\/how-to-deprogram-your-friends-family-from-the-cult-of-fiat-currency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lost 44.2% of its purchasing power<\/a> since 2000 &#8212; that means that the dollars you saved 20 years ago have lost almost <em><strong>half<\/strong><\/em> of their purchasing power. And <em><strong>that<\/strong><\/em> means our corrupt debt-based fiat monetary system guarantees the further you&#8217;re away from retirement, the less purchasing power you&#8217;re actually saving. It also means more people are headed for a lower-than-expected standard of living in their &#8220;golden&#8221; years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Unfortunately, we can&#8217;t count on the economy to grow its way out of the mess it currently finds itself in. In fact, a recent analysis by investment advisors Michael Liebowitz and Jack Scott shows that, based on the trends of the past 40 years, &#8220;the economy will not regain pre-COVID output levels until <a href=\"https:\/\/realinvestmentadvice.com\/the-decade-long-path-ahead-to-recovery-part-1-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sometime in the 2030s<\/a>.&#8221; I know &#8230; Apparently, they missed the news that a V-recovery is just around the corner.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The stock market is certainly all-in on the V-recovery meme. Despite no earnings growth since 2018, the latest Wall Street soiree has become so reckless that asset manager Sven Henrich now refers to the markets as &#8220;a <a href=\"https:\/\/northmantrader.com\/2020\/07\/06\/the-bubble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">liquidity meth lab<\/a>; an artificial behemoth constructed and subsidized by the Fed. It&#8217;s folly to pretend they&#8217;re anything else. Call it what you like, but don&#8217;t call it capitalism.&#8221; Okay. But if you&#8217;re expecting me top &#8220;liquidity meth lab,&#8221; I&#8217;m gonna pass.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">if you&#8217;re new to investing this is how it works &#8211; companies magically increase in value overnight while you are sleeping and the stock market isn&#8217;t even open<\/p>\n<p>StockCats (@StockCats) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StockCats\/status\/1280118781587492864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 6, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, a soaring stock market doesn&#8217;t always signal a healthy economy &#8212; it can also indicate a failing currency. Before the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/zimbabwes-plan-to-save-its-currency-shut-down-the-stock-exchange-11594129176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shut it down<\/a> last month, Zimbabwe&#8217;s bourse had returned 677% in 2020, despite a GDP that&#8217;s expected to contract 10%. Yes, that&#8217;s an impressive <em><strong>nominal<\/strong><\/em> gain &#8212; but ultimately, it&#8217;s illusory <em><strong>real<\/strong><\/em> wealth with annual inflation in Zimbabwe now <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/408053\/zimbabwes-inflation-rate-hits-785-55\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pushing 1000%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> How crazy has the US stock market become? Well &#8230; Tesla became the largest automaker in the world last week; even bigger than Toyota &#8212; yes, <em><strong>that<\/strong><\/em> Toyota, which sold 11 million cars in 2019, compared to Tesla&#8217;s 367,500. In fact, after closing Monday at $1371, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/tesla-now-bigger-intel-verizon-att-walt-disney-and-bank-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla became the 15th largest company<\/a> in the S&amp;P500. Oh, wait &#8230; Tesla <em><strong>isn&#8217;t in the S&amp;P 500<\/strong><\/em> because &#8212; wait for it &#8212; the company can&#8217;t meet the index&#8217;s positive net income requirement. <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/tesla-stock-inclusion-sp500-index-verge-qualifying-profit-four-quarters-2020-5-1029211998#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No, really<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In fact, Tesla&#8217;s current market cap now makes it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/top-stories\/20\/07\/16526362\/4-companies-you-wont-believe-have-a-smaller-market-cap-than-tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bigger than most companies<\/a> that actually <em><strong>can<\/strong><\/em> turn an annual profit and stand on its own two feet without government support, including: Bank of America, Walt Disney, PayPal, Netflix, AT&amp;T, Verizon, NVidia, and Intel. Does anybody <em><strong>else<\/strong><\/em> see a problem here? Or here:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9JuDGFaKR-E?controls=0&amp;start=710;end=741\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> As macroeconomist Alasdair Macleod noted this week, &#8220;We&#8217;re now seeing central banks, like some <a href=\"https:\/\/kingworldnews.com\/inflation-is-about-to-accelerate-and-then-it-will-become-terrifying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latter-day Aztec priests<\/a>, trying to appease their gods with human sacrifices. We are the sacrifices, lesser mortals trying to do the best for our families and ourselves, being slaughtered by monetary means.&#8221; True. I see an awe-struck monetary minion has already proposed a new monument to honor our Fed overlords &#8230; or not:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61921\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mt.-Printmore-1024x645.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"532\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mt.-Printmore-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mt.-Printmore-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mt.-Printmore-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Mt.-Printmore.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, Macleod is also warning that, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/cooperator.com\/article\/coping-with-cash-flow-problems\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Businesses are in arrears<\/a> as never before, with many unused shopping malls, office blocks and factories, and unpaid rents &#8212; and it&#8217;s this problem which is likely to tip the banking system over the edge and into an immediate crisis; likely this month.&#8221; Wait &#8230; this <em><strong>month<\/strong><\/em>? That&#8217;s a gutsy call. We&#8217;ll see &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> So, if the Fed insists on keeping the printing press on hyperdrive during an economic depression, then at some point we&#8217;ll find ourselves in a situation with too many dollars chasing too few goods &#8212; and that can <em><strong>only<\/strong><\/em> result in one outcome: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/how-can-there-be-no-inflation-if-the-things-we-are-actually-buying-are-more-expensive-2020-06-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rampant price inflation<\/a> spreading from financial assets like stocks and bonds into things everyone needs, like food, fuel and medicine. It may not happen tomorrow &#8212; but the day <em><strong>is<\/strong><\/em> coming. Most likely sooner than later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When COVID-19 arrived in America, Uncle Sam was already deep in debt, with a permanent annual budget deficit of at least $1 trillion. But after the most recent three months of frenzied spending, that seems like small potatoes:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$3,600,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Amount of emergency government outlays this year directly related to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$2,400,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The net impact of the emergency spending on the 2020 deficit.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$2,000,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Emergency funding the Fed has printed or loaned so far.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$3,500,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Total emergency funding expected to be printed or loaned by the Fed in all of 2020.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$500,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Amount in a special COVID emergency fund created for businesses with under 10,000 employees or less than $2.5 billion in revenue.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$25,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Portion of the COVID emergency fund allocated to air carriers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$17,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Portion of the COVID emergency fund allocated for businesses deemed to be &#8220;critical&#8221; to national security.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$4,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Portion of the COVID emergency fund allocated for cargo air carriers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$649,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Amount of special small business funds that have been made available for companies with fewer than 500 employees though a newly formed Payroll Protection Program.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2020\/07\/09\/has-the-u-s-government-finally-spent-too-much\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reason<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Result<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are cryptocurrencies a legitimate wealth preservation asset?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No (73%)<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m not sure (23%)<\/li>\n<li>Yes (4%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 2100 Len Penzo dot Com readers responded to last week&#8217;s question and it turns out that just 1 in 25 of them believe cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin are a legitimate wealth preservation asset. I suspect that figure is so low because I&#8217;ve been preaching they&#8217;re <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> for many years now &#8212; and for many reasons. The biggest being that they are non-tangible products that can only be valued in the very fiat currencies that they supposedly insure against. Gold and silver don&#8217;t have that problem because, unlike cryptocurrencies, gold and silver are both <em><strong>rare<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>real <\/strong><\/em> &#8212; they&#8217;re both part of the periodic table of elements &#8212; and can therefore be valued <em><strong>physically<\/strong><\/em>; that is, in terms of weight. Think about it: If the dollar&#8217;s purchasing power dropped to zero tomorrow, what is a bitcoin truly worth? Mathematically, the answer is &#8220;infinity dollars&#8221; &#8212; but in the real world, the answer would be something far different. Ironically, if the dollar died tomorrow, it would be physical gold holders who would &#8212; directly or indirectly &#8212; ultimately have the final say on the true value of a bitcoin.
