People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Cicero<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We can guarantee cash benefits in any size, and any duration you want. What we <strong>can&#8217;t<\/strong> guarantee is the purchasing power of those benefits.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Alan Greenspan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> I see that millennials are now using high-interest loans to tie the knot. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyherald.com\/business\/20190623\/married-to-debt-couples-are-taking-out-loans-to-pay-for-their-weddings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No, really<\/a>. With the average loan at $16,000, and interest rates of 7% to 18%, couples see them as a better option than credit cards. Okay; but what ever happened to saving? The craze has become so widespread that wedding-loan demand has quadrupled since last year. Then again, we humans aren&#8217;t the <em><strong>only<\/strong><\/em> ones who do something stupid because others do it too:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AOOs8MaR1YM?controls=0&amp;start=1;end=125\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, one-third of Americans say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/06\/28\/why-one-third-of-americans-have-decided-to-cut-back-on-spending.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they&#8217;ve cut spending<\/a> in the last year; the reasons ranged from a loss of household income and new debt to fear of recession, job loss or large medical bills from an unexpected illness or injury. Unlike taking out a high-interest loan to fund an expensive wedding day soiree, <em><strong>that&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em> perfectly rational financial behavior.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of recession fears, a recent survey from Bankrate shows that 4 in 10 of Americans believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankrate.com\/surveys\/experts-vs-everyday-americans-june-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the next recession is already here<\/a> &#8212; or will be here within a year. Although, truth be told, its hard to get to &#8220;the next recession&#8221; when the last one <em><strong>never actually ended<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, most Americans can sense the true state of the economy&#8217;s pulse &#8212; so they don&#8217;t need the latest global manufacturing surveys to tell them that the current growth phase isn&#8217;t only finished, but most likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-07-01\/global-factory-output-contracts-for-the-first-time-in-80-months\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already in contraction<\/a>. For example, JPMorgan&#8217;s manufacturing index just fell to its lowest level in six years, posting back-to-back contraction readings for the first time since the second half of 2012. Uh oh.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> And there&#8217;s more trouble: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-06-30\/hedge-fund-cio-math-does-not-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Government pensions remain woefully underfunded<\/a>. Before the 2008 crisis, state pension plans were 14% underfunded; it&#8217;s 31% today, despite a 300% gain in the real value of equities since 2009, record corporate profits, and unemployment near all-time lows. In case you&#8217;re wondering, Kentucky is in the worst shape, at 64% underfunded, followed by Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, and New Jersey, at roughly 50%.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In fact, Kentucky&#8217;s pension system could be one of the worst in America, with $2 billion in assets &#8212; but $15.6 billion in liabilities. The situation is so dire that even its Executive Director, David Eager, admits the system is in its death throes: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-06-28\/pension-crisis-deepens-as-strategies-shift-outlooks-dim-chart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We call it the death spiral<\/a>. You can&#8217;t earn your way out of this.&#8221; No &#8212; but you can <em><strong>cut<\/strong><\/em> your way out. Get ready, government retirees &#8230; <em><strong>it&#8217;s coming:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FP_1bUTo-9I?controls=0&amp;start=26\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Here&#8217;s a typical example of the futility in saving these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/14\/business\/pension-finance-oregon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insanely generous state and municipal pensions<\/a> across America: Chicagoans owe $150 billion in city, county and state retirement debt &#8212; that&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/wirepoints.org\/wealthy-chicago-households-on-the-hook-for-up-to-2-million-in-debt-each-under-progressive-approach-to-pension-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nearly $145,000 per household<\/a>. The bad news is, with 1 in 5 Chicagoans living in poverty, and nearly half of all Chicago households making less than $50,000 a year, that&#8217;s a debt that can never be paid. Ever.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> In reality, most government pensions aren&#8217;t underfunded &#8212; they&#8217;re <em><strong>over-promised<\/strong><\/em>. And despite irrefutable evidence that most government pension funds are in serious trouble, there are plenty of statist toadies in academia who are <a href=\"https:\/\/wirepoints.org\/with-pension-advice-like-this-chicago-and-illinois-are-doomed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deliberately spewing disinformation<\/a> to the contrary based on nothing more than hand-waving and vacuous logic, claiming that long-term debt is nothing to worry about. Sad. (<em>h\/t: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-06-30\/wealthy-chicago-households-hook-2-million-debt-each-under-progressive-solution?commentId=862740b2-7c85-4390-adfa-5ef91c467bfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JJ Pettigrew<\/a><\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, Europe announced last week that their special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-06-28\/trump-unleash-hell-europe-after-eu-says-spv-circumvent-swift-and-iran-sanctions-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instex trade channel is now operational<\/a>. Instex is intended to allow European firms to avoid America&#8217;s competing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Society_for_Worldwide_Interbank_Financial_Telecommunication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SWIFT system<\/a>. It&#8217;s also yet <em><strong>another<\/strong><\/em> nail in the US dollar&#8217;s status as the world&#8217;s premier reserve currency.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> MN Gordon eloquently explains why the world is abandoning the dollar: &#8220;Bernanke said unconventional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/q\/quantitative-easing.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QE policies<\/a> were temporary, and that the Fed&#8217;s massive balance sheet expansion would be normalized. And when Nixon suspended the dollar&#8217;s convertibility into gold in 1971, he too said it was temporary. But once a cucumber becomes a pickle it can never be a cucumber again. Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/economicprism.com\/fed-chair-powells-plan-to-pickle-the-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial markets have been pickled<\/a> over to no end.&#8221; Pucker up, folks.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> As George Gilder lamented this week: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/three-steps-to-save-america-from-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Our monetary system is broken<\/a>. It&#8217;s given us low growth, a shrinking job force, (excessive wealth) inequality, inefficiency, and the unnatural growth of finance as a portion of the economy.&#8221; All true. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s also allowed government to grow <em><strong>far<\/strong><\/em> beyond our Founding Fathers&#8217; original intentions and impinge upon every American&#8217;s liberty.
