Tesla just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/05\/21\/tesla-lowers-prices-on-models-s-and-x-amid-stock-slump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cut $3000 off the price<\/a> of its Model S sedan, and $2000 off its Model X SUV. Unfortunately, reducing the prices of its two most expensive models have increased concern that interest in Tesla&#8217;s electric vehicles is rapidly waning. Despite consistently struggling to turn a profit, apparently Tesla actually believes it can stop the bleeding by further lowering prices and making it up in volume.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of Tesla, since topping out at $387.59 last August, its share price has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jimcollins\/2019\/05\/21\/as-tesla-shares-plunge-again-bets-on-the-companys-ultimate-demise-are-increasing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plunged more than 50%<\/a>; it closed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-05-24\/week-finally-burst-tesla-stock-bubble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the current week<\/a> at $190.63. But I&#8217;m sure that has <em><strong>nothing<\/strong><\/em> to do with reports that the drive for cost cutting is now so severe that teams at several Tesla facilities have stopped purchasing office supplies <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2019\/05\/24\/tesla-cost-cutting-effort-toilet-paper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">including toilet paper<\/a>. (Insert your own scatalogical joke here. No, go ahead; I&#8217;ll wait.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, Tesla isn&#8217;t the <em><strong>only<\/strong><\/em> stock that&#8217;s in the doldrums right now. The Dow finished the week in the red for the fifth consecutive time. Yep. The last time the Dow had a five-week losing streak was <em><strong>eight years ago<\/strong><\/em>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/05\/17\/stock-market-investors-worry-rising-trade-tensions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 2011<\/a>, if you want to be precise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, I see that Jeff Koons&#8217; 41-inch tall &#8220;Rabbit&#8221; sculpture sold for $91 million last week; that&#8217;s the most ever for a living artist, breaking a record that was set just last year. As Jesse Colombo notes, &#8220;The art market (is) a barometer for the amount of froth in the global economy and financial markets. When the art market goes ballistic, that&#8217;s a sign of an <a href=\"https:\/\/realinvestmentadvice.com\/record-setting-art-sales-confirm-global-liquidity-bubble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">economic cycle in its latter stages<\/a>.&#8221; Anyway, here&#8217;s what $91 million (commission included) buys today:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/APhHUwKi5zo?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, taxpayers in America&#8217;s ten biggest cities face an average burden of $50,000 in debt incurred by county, state and city government entities. New York and LA had burdens of $85,600 and $56,390, respectively. But it&#8217;s even worse for Chicago&#8217;s residents: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-05-16\/americas-top-cities-swamped-debt-chicago-leads-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they currently owe $119,110<\/a>! You know, they say George Washington never told a lie. Then again, he never had to pay income or property taxes either.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The ever-increasing tax burden for big-city denizens is especially bad news for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7024883\/Almost-two-thirds-Millennials-live-paycheck-paycheck-just-38-feel-financially-stable.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">59% of millennials who are living paycheck to paycheck<\/a>. The millennials also spend an average of $478 each month for restaurants, entertainment and luxury items &#8212; ironically, that&#8217;s 33% more than the financially better-off baby boomers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> One reason millennials are in such dire financial straits is because they make up the majority of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/student-loan-debt-i-had-a-panic-attack-millennials-struggle-under-the-burden-of-student-loan-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">43 million Americans saddled with student debt<\/a>; in all, $1.5 trillion worth. As a result, the average American household with student debt now owes $48,000 &#8212; and 5.2 million borrowers are in default. Not surprisingly, the only <em><strong>true<\/strong><\/em> beneficiary of these government student loans has been the universities. Imagine that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Also not surprisingly, American millennials are approaching middle age in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/playing-catch-up-in-the-game-of-life-millennials-approach-middle-age-in-crisis-11558290908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worse financial shape<\/a> than the baby boomers and Gen X. A new study found that millennial households had an average net worth of about $92,000 in 2016 &#8212; adjusted for inflation, that&#8217;s 40% less than Gen X households in 2001, and 20% lower than baby boomer households in 1989. Hey &#8230; it&#8217;s <em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em> supposed to work this way, folks.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The good news for millennials is, there&#8217;s <em><strong>plenty<\/strong><\/em> of affordable housing. Believe it or not, thanks to fanatic demand from millennials, Amazon has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-tiny-home-kit-8-hours-2019-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently started selling DIY kits<\/a>, as well as pre-built tiny homes &#8212; including a $7250 kit that can be assembled in eight hours. No, really.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> But seriously, as Zero Hedge observes, &#8220;The tiny home craze among millennials is just more evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-05-16\/attention-millennials-you-can-now-buy-tiny-homes-amazon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">living standards are collapsing<\/a>.&#8221; On the other hand, I know a guy who would disagree with that assessment:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ore2GcXFIv4?controls=0&amp;start=6;end=327\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Ahem. More to the point, Sven Henrich helps shine a white-hot spotlight on <em><strong>part<\/strong><\/em> of the reason why living standards are declining: We&#8217;re all paying for the constant central bank manipulation we&#8217;ve been subjected to since the Great Financial Crisis of 2008:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The end result of never letting the system clean itself out:<br \/>\nHighest debt levels ever (corp, consumer, govn&#8217;t), highest wealth inequality in our lifetimes, highest BBB rated debt yet the least growth compared to all prev. recoveries w\/ 50% of the pop living paycheck to paycheck.<\/p>\n<p>Sven Henrich (@NorthmanTrader) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NorthmanTrader\/status\/1130814967601664000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 21, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, that central bank manipulation, directly via a decade of low, if not negative, interest rates &#8212; and indirectly via stock market interference by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/p\/plunge-protection-team.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plunge Protection Team<\/a> &#8212; have painted central banks into a corner. As a result, Bill Fleckenstein says, &#8220;we&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/kingworldnews.com\/mountains-of-misallocated-capital-and-all-of-its-consequences-will-intensify-as-bear-market-strengthens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stuck with policies that don&#8217;t work<\/a>, but they&#8217;re afraid to change. As more people figure this out, it will have negative consequences for stocks and bonds.&#8221; At least in theory.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> It may seem improbable at the moment, but one day the markets will overwhelm the central banks&#8217; ability to keep the illusion that all is well. Thankfully, precious metals will be <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id16252-silver-and-gold-the-superheroes-of-wealth-preservation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a guaranteed safe haven<\/a> when that day finally comes &#8212; <em><strong>if<\/strong><\/em> they&#8217;re still available. One more bit of good news: 50 years ago, the inflation-adjusted price of silver was roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/goldsilver.com\/blog\/its-official-gold-silver-prices-now-at-inflation-adjusted-50-year-lows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$683 per ounce<\/a>. It&#8217;s less than $15 today. Who says insurance isn&#8217;t cheap?<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just in time to kick off the summer driving season, car-shopping and research site iSeeCars.com analyzed US fatality data for 25 million cars for model years 2013-2017 to find out which vehicles were most often involved in fatal crashes.
