A woman won $10,000 after discovering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2019\/03\/07\/how-this-woman-won-by-reading-fine-print-her-insurance-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a hidden contest<\/a> in the often-ignored fine print of a travel insurance contract. No, really. However, as one commenter on the story wryly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-03-07\/self-proclaimed-nerd-wins-10000-after-discovering-hidden-contest-insurance-contract?commentId=9f7e5daf-7335-4417-8e6e-30e8356f617c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">observed<\/a>: It&#8217;s one thing to <em><strong>read<\/strong><\/em> the contract; but getting an insurance company to <em><strong>honor<\/strong><\/em> it is a completely different story. <em>(h\/t: Thom Paine)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, thanks to elevated mortgage interest rates, the house-flipping industry continues to get dicier by the day, as profits from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attomdata.com\/news\/most-recent\/2018-year-end-u-s-home-flipping-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">housing-market speculation fell<\/a> to their lowest level in seven years. And for those who are wondering if all of those home flippers who have been riding the Fed-induced decade-long low-interest-rate gravy train have finally started heading for the exits, well &#8230; see for yourself:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eu4DlwE0Bu8?controls=0&amp;start=0;end=30\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, housing isn&#8217;t the only industry facing smaller profits. After several years of American auto sales at or near all-time highs, the annualized February vehicle sales rate drove off a cliff, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-01\/jeep-drop-drags-fiat-chrysler-to-first-sales-decline-in-a-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its worst reading in 18 months<\/a>. See what I did there?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Anyway &#8230; if declining auto and home sales weren&#8217;t signs that we&#8217;re heading for a recession, maybe this observation from David Rosenberg regarding February&#8217;s US retail sales will convince you:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What a retail sales report! 4 months in a row of decline in furniture\/home furnishings; 5 months of decline in electronics\/appliance sales; clothing at a 10-month low; gas sales at a 15-month low; electronics at an 18-month low; furniture at a 20-month low. All shutdown related?<\/p>\n<p>David Rosenberg (@EconguyRosie) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EconguyRosie\/status\/1105176922831704065?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, the millennial generation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-03-12\/millennials-are-more-trillion-dollars-debt-and-most-them-dont-even-own-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deeper in debt<\/a> than any other generation that has come before them &#8212; at least when compared to a similar point in time. In fact, millennials are more than $1 trillion in debt. Compared to Gen X, millennial mortgage debt is about 15% lower, and their credit card debt is 33% less. However, their student loan debt is 300% higher; and, sadly, most of those degrees won&#8217;t provide a decent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/r\/returnoninvestment.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ROI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> So with more fresh currency being conjured out of thin air worldwide than ever before, why is the Main St. economy beginning to sputter? Well &#8230; last week Rick Rule eloquently explained it in a single sentence: &#8220;Our ability to continue business as usual is beginning to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sovereignman.com\/investing\/predictions-for-gold-from-a-legendary-natural-resource-investor-24687\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">constrained by arithmetic<\/a>.&#8221; Yes it is, although &#8220;strangled&#8221; is a much better term &#8212; and the noose is quickly tightening.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Focusing the spotlight on the Fed&#8217;s QE program, Tom Luongo notes that money printing is a failure &#8220;because when you paper over reality you don&#8217;t fix the underlying problems. <a href=\"https:\/\/tomluongo.me\/2019\/03\/09\/draghi-cant-kick-can-next-guy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The losses are still there<\/a>, hidden in plain sight, held at mark-to-model prices, on central bank balance sheets.&#8221; But I&#8217;m sure Tom will change his tune after he learns about the <a href=\"https:\/\/mises.org\/library\/upside-down-world-mmt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magic money tree<\/a> (MMT) that everybody is raving about. Or not.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Economist Jeff Diest has a modest proposal for the Fed: &#8220;Return the country to &#8216;ordinary&#8217; monetary policy. If in fact QE saved the country and wasn&#8217;t merely an artificial process of juicing the economy and monetizing debt, <a href=\"https:\/\/mises.org\/wire\/modest-proposal-fed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it can and must be fully unwound<\/a>. Until then, we can&#8217;t know if economic growth is real or artificial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, after initially implementing QE, the Fed promised they would unwind their balance sheet &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/testimony\/bernanke20100210a.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the appropriate time<\/a>.&#8221; That was way back in 2010 &#8212; so why aren&#8217;t they doing it now, a full decade after the economic crisis supposedly ended? Could it be they&#8217;re afraid if they <em><strong>do<\/strong><\/em> unwind it fully, this would be the result?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eF-fyn-WfIs?controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of economic crises, you can add the Big Apple to the list of US cities <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/03\/09\/new-york-city-is-edging-toward-financial-disaster-experts-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">careening toward bankruptcy<\/a>. Economist Milton Ezrati warns that, &#8220;New York City is running a deficit and could be in a difficult spot if we have a recession, or a further flight of (wealthy) individuals because of tax reform.&#8221; I know; the odds of those things happening are slim and none &#8230; at least according to everybody who still believes in the tooth fairy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In case you weren&#8217;t paying attention, Sunday is St. Patrick&#8217;s Day. Here&#8217;s a few facts on this happy holiday:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>55%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The percentage of Americans who plan on celebrating St. Patrick&#8217;s Day this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>81%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The percentage of people who say they plan to wear green.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>40<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Pounds of dye required to tint the Chicago River green.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/span><\/span> St. Patrick&#8217;s Day&#8217;s ranking among the most popular drinking days, after Mardi Gras and New Year&#8217;s Eve.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>4.2<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The average number of drinks consumed per person on St. Patrick&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>13,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Pints of Guinness that will be consumed on St. Patrick&#8217;s Day this year worldwide.
