Because every hand&#8217;s a winner, and every hand&#8217;s a loser, and the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; &#8220;The Gambler&#8221; lyrics by Don Schlitz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Just in time for cold-weather season: Natural gas prices are at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/natural-gas-prices-just-booked-the-largest-daily-percentage-gain-in-14-years-up-18-2018-11-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a four-year high<\/a>, after climbing 18% on Thursday &#8212; that was the largest one-day percentage gain since 2004, and the largest price increase in dollar terms since 2007. You can bet if prices keep climbing I&#8217;ll be asking Santa for a warm coat this Christmas. Or at least a nice sweater.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> I wonder if Santa knows that, according to the US Census Bureau, last year 52% of American children under age 18 lived in households in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/commentary\/terence-p-jeffrey\/welfare-generation-kids-households-getting-government-assistance-drop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least one person<\/a> received benefits from a means-tested government program. And if you think that&#8217;s surprising, more than 115 million Americans of <em><strong>all<\/strong><\/em> ages are receiving some form of government assistance. Ho ho ho.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Did you see this? Following yet another downgrade by JPMorgan, shares of General Electric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/general-electrics-stock-traded-under-8-1542040294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell to $7.99 last week<\/a> &#8212; that&#8217;s what it was selling for way back in 1995. How the mighty have fallen. Yes, this is the same GE that regularly has the largest tax return in the US; <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130115221826\/https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/IRS-e-file-Moves-Forward%3B-Successfully-Executes-Electronic-Filing-of-Nation%E2%80%99s-Largest-Tax-Return\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GE&#8217;s 2005 return<\/a> was 24,000 pages, and 237 megabytes when submitted electronically. And you thought <em><strong>your<\/strong><\/em> taxes were tough.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Actually, as Michael Santoli notes, GE&#8217;s long-term technical position is much worse today than it was in 1995:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The latest plunge in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24GE&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$GE<\/a> pretty decisively broke an 86-year uptrend for the stock. (Chart courtesy of Jeff deGraaf of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RenMacLLC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RenMacLLC<\/a>.) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/H0iQc5Urlm\">pic.twitter.com\/H0iQc5Urlm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Michael Santoli (@michaelsantoli) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michaelsantoli\/status\/1062444981661642753?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 13, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> For a bit of perspective, GE&#8217;s market cap is now $70 billion, which makes it the 80th largest company in the S&amp;P 500. And while that may <em><strong>seem<\/strong><\/em> impressive, it&#8217;s just the opposite when you consider that, in 2003, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-11-13\/collapse-has-begun-ge-now-trading-junk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GE was the largest company<\/a> in the index &#8212; and <em><strong>the world<\/strong><\/em> between 1993 and 2005 &#8212; with a market cap of $296 billion. Those who think Google, Amazon and Apple are invincible should remember that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> So what happened to GE? Too much red ink. As Bill Blain notes, US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-11-16\/blain-ges-credit-meltdown-coming-just-right-time-ruin-everyones-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporations have gorged on cheap debt<\/a> for a long time, using it all to buy back their own stock or payout the leveraged buyout funds that own them. As a result, &#8220;Converting equity into debt to give cash to owners means they haven&#8217;t built new plants to make stuff that will repay debt. And that multiplies their vulnerability to rising interest rates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> It&#8217;s no secret that the Fed has been grossly distorting credit markets for a decade, which is why MN Gordon warns, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/economicprism.com\/when-fake-money-becomes-scarce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The attraction of fake money<\/a> is too much to pass up. Why save and invest when you can borrow and spend? Yet, now, as credit tightens and fake money becomes scarce, busts, bankruptcies, and bailouts will become the order of the day.&#8221; He&#8217;s right, folks. Think: Twitter and Tesla, to name two.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/investmentresearchdynamics.com\/teslas-q3-gaap-net-income-manipulation-if-not-outright-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it&#8217;s not just Tesla<\/a>; with few exceptions, the <em><strong>entire<\/strong><\/em> automobile industry has become dependent on fake money. So it shouldn&#8217;t be surprising that passenger car sales in China are on course for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-11-09\/chinese-auto-sales-suffer-historic-collapse-set-first-annual-decline-30-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first yearly decline in nearly 30 years<\/a> &#8212; despite China&#8217;s claim that annual GDP is still growing at more than 7%. Then again, if you believe China&#8217;s GDP figures, you&#8217;ll probably believe <strong><em>this<\/em><\/strong> too:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of China, according to Bloomberg, soon-to-be-published research will show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-08\/a-fifth-of-china-s-homes-are-empty-that-s-50-million-apartments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22% of China&#8217;s urban housing stock is unoccupied<\/a>. That amounts to more than 50 million empty homes. You can take this as a textbook example of how too much credit leads to malinvestment. It&#8217;s also a ticking time bomb; hopefully, the banksters know how to diffuse it. If not, I guess they can always refer to <em><strong>this<\/strong><\/em> instructional video:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nXoPEmh39ls?end=124;controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Finally &#8230; remember the story of the homeless vet who gave his last $20 to a woman whose car had run out of gas in a dangerous Philly neighborhood? That, in turn, led to a GoFundMe campaign for the veteran that generated $400,000. Well, apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/homeless-samaritan-tale-raised-400k-police-say-its-a-lie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it was all a lie<\/a>. The proceeds are gone too; squandered by the woman and her hubby on gambling junkets, designer purses and a BMW. It&#8217;s all so sad, really. As a point of comparison, there were an estimated 11 million millionaires in the US last year &#8212; or roughly 3% of all Americans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With 20% of my readers officially millionaires, I think it&#8217;s only prudent to share some figures regarding the official estate and gift tax limits for 2019 that were announced by the IRS this week:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>40%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The US federal estate tax rate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$11,400,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The US estate and gift tax exemption for individuals. (It&#8217;s doubled for married couples.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$15,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The annual gift exclusion for Americans; that&#8217;s unchanged from last year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>1890<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The estimated number of taxable estates this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>52,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The number of taxable estates 18 years ago, when the estate tax exemption was just $675,000.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ashleaebeling\/2018\/11\/15\/irs-announces-higher-2019-estate-and-gift-tax-limits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Useless News: Eyes on You<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"joke-text\">\n<p id=\"joke_7792\">Late one night a burglar broke into a house.
