The plunging cryptocurrency closed the first quarter of 2018 at a price <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-03-30\/crypto-carnage-continues-bitcoin-back-below-7000-ether-under-400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">south of $7000<\/a>. That&#8217;s a 60% decline in a little more than three months. Ouch. Oh, I know &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chuckjones\/2018\/03\/29\/keep-calm-and-hodl-on-the-case-for-owning-bitcoin\/#2dca748c5191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Just HODL, baby<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> After a couple of frustrating postponements, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atimes.com\/article\/china-taking-long-road-solve-petro-yuan-puzzle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China&#8217;s new crude oil futures<\/a> exchange got <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Crude-Oil\/China-Yuan-Futures-Launch-With-A-Bang.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">off to a roaring start<\/a> on Monday, with brisk contracts trading for September and the months beyond. In fact, more than 62 million barrels of oil changed hands on Monday for a notional volume approximately 27 billion yuan &#8212; that&#8217;s the equivalent of $4 billion. Not bad!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> One thing is certain: China&#8217;s crude futures exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-oil-futures-dollar\/china-oil-futures-launch-may-threaten-primacy-of-u-s-dollar-ubs-idUSKBN1H227E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">threatens the international primacy of the dollar<\/a>. Remember, the petrodollar is backed by Treasuries, which are used to fuel US deficit spending. Take that away, and America is in trouble because dollars that would normally be kept off shore by foreign nations to buy oil are more likely to return to America, thereby stoking much higher inflation here.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, the timing couldn&#8217;t be worse; the United States sold roughly <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/27\/investing\/us-debt-sale-record-treasury\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$294 billion of debt<\/a> this week &#8212; that&#8217;s the highest weekly borrowing binge since the 2008 financial crisis. On second thought, meh. Million, billion &#8230; what&#8217;s a few more zeroes when the <a href=\"http:\/\/usdebtclock.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Debt<\/a> is $21 trillion?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, the Socialists in Venezuela outlined their monetary &#8220;rescue plan&#8221; to end the hyperinflation that has completely collapsed their economy. As the Washington Post notes, &#8220;In a country where a dozen eggs costs 250,000 bolivars amid worsening inflation, President Nicolas Maduro wants to chop three zeros off the currency, arguably bringing the price for those eggs down to 250.&#8221; Heh. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/worldviews\/wp\/2018\/03\/23\/venezuela-hopes-to-tackle-the-worlds-worst-inflation-by-deleting-zeros-from-its-currency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No, really<\/a>. Forward!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Henri Falcon, a former governor who is running against Maduro in the next election, is proposing a far more radical fix: chop <em>four<\/em> zeroes off the price. Just kidding! Actually, Falcon wants to follow in the footsteps of Ecuador, Panama and <a href=\"http:\/\/nehandaradio.com\/2014\/03\/28\/dollarisation-contributed-zimbabwean-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zimbabwe by dollarizing<\/a> the Venezuelan economy. He claims it would revive their moribund socialist economy by preventing the printing of new bolivars. (Psst. And he&#8217;s correct.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, strong stock-market performance and rising real-estate valuations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/03\/21\/us-added-700000-new-millionaires-in-2017.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increased the ranks of American millionaires<\/a> by 700,000 people. Then again, that&#8217;s really not so impressive when you realize that when the Fed prints trillions of dollars and then hands it to Wall Street, there&#8217;s always going to be a lot of new millionaires. If you think about it, everybody in Venezuela today is a &#8220;millionaire&#8221; too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of Fed-minted American millionaires &#8212; or should I say, billionaires? &#8212; Simon Black says the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sovereignman.com\/trends\/tesla-without-any-doubt-is-on-the-verge-of-bankruptcy-23219\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$50 billion (!) pay package Tesla shareholders approved<\/a> for CEO Elon Musk indicates that &#8220;Tesla, without any doubt, is on the verge of bankruptcy.&#8221; Perhaps stockholders are beginning to feel the same way &#8212; Tesla&#8217;s stock price has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/tesla-stock-falls-even-farther-after-model-s-recall-2018-03-29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plunged more than 25%<\/a> in the last month. Oops.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Says Black: <em>&#8220;As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/29\/business\/tesla-elon-musk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a reality check<\/a>, Tesla is worth twice as much as Ford, yet Ford made six million cars last year at a $7.6 billion profit while Tesla made 100,000 cars at a $2 billion loss. Ford also has $12 billion in cash for &#8216;a rainy day&#8217; while Tesla will likely run out of money in three months. I&#8217;ve never seen anything so absurd in my career.&#8221;<\/em> Well, Simon &#8230; I don&#8217;t know about that. Apparently, you never saw <em>this<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/74-WSM0xTyE?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of reality checks, I saw that Los Angeles homes alone are currently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorhousingbubble.com\/total-value-of-us-real-estate-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">valued at $ 2.7 trillion<\/a>. To put that in perspective, that&#8217;s more than the GDP of the entire United Kingdom. Needless to say, housing values across America are at all-time highs too. According to Zillow, the total value of every US home is $31.8 trillion &#8212; that&#8217;s 1.5 times US GDP and nearly three times China&#8217;s GDP. Nope. No bubble there.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, those home prices may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-03-29\/why-albert-edwards-thinks-now-time-worry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coming down soon<\/a> if mortgage delinquencies &#8212; or mortgage interest rates &#8212; keep rising. Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tedknutson\/2018\/03\/28\/residential-mortgage-applications-up-despite-rising-interest-rates\/#4c28d1fb3637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">applications <em>did<\/em> increase<\/a> last week. However, the average 30-year rate is now 4.75%; two years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhamortgagesource.com\/fha-interest-rates-march-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it was 3.3%<\/a>. That means since March 2016, the monthly payment on a $250,000 mortgage has climbed from $1095 to $1304. You think wages climbed that fast? Neither do I.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Mortgage payments aren&#8217;t the only debts with distressed borrowers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/credit-card-losses-surge-at-small-banks-1520198436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Missed payments on credit cards<\/a> at small banks &#8212; that is, those outside the 100 largest, measured by total assets &#8212; have risen sharply over the past year too, with charge-off rates above 7%. The last time there was a similar surge in the average charge-off rate at small banks was right before the onset of the Great Financial Crisis. Uh oh.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48073\" style=\"width: 541px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/credit-card-delinquencies-2006-2017-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48073\" class=\"wp-image-48073\" src=\"http:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/credit-card-delinquencies-2006-2017-1-1024x731.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/credit-card-delinquencies-2006-2017-1-1024x731.png 1024w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/credit-card-delinquencies-2006-2017-1-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/credit-card-delinquencies-2006-2017-1-768x549.png 768w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/credit-card-delinquencies-2006-2017-1.png 1414w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> On the other hand, real personal spending was unchanged last month, after a 0.2% drop in January &#8212; that&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-03-29\/new-frugal-normal-us-savings-rate-rises-buying-plans-tumble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biggest two-month decline<\/a> since &#8230; wait for it: the 2008 financial crisis. Not coincidentally, the personal savings rate is climbing, bucking a two-year downtrend; last month it ticked from 3.2% to 3.4%. Too bad the interest that banks pay savers is still virtually nil, guaranteeing lost purchasing power.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> So there you have it: higher prices, stagnant wages &#8212; the perfect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-03-29\/stagflation-alert-wages-and-salaries-roll-over\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stagflation recipe<\/a> &#8212; coupled with rising savings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/07\/11\/credit-card-users-rack-up-over-1-trillion-in-debt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">maxed out credit cards<\/a>, and plunging spending plans, and topped off with a rapidly-inverting yield curve, illustrated by the chart below. It&#8217;s a cocktail that strongly suggests the nine-year economic &#8220;recovery&#8221; and the bull market in stocks are coming to an end.
