Hungary will be removing three tons of the yellow metal it now stores in London. For some reason, Hungary seems to think gold is money par excellence, unlike <em>some<\/em> people:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2Dj9v9s9buk?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Heck, even the socialist Hugo Chavez knew that only gold and silver were real money. It&#8217;s why he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2012-01-31\/venezuela-receives-last-shipment-of-repatriated-gold-bars-1-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repatriated 180 tons<\/a> of the yellow metal to Venezuela in 2011 &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2015\/10\/29\/news\/economy\/venezuela-selling-gold\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold that the nation has been selling<\/a> ever since to pay debts after its fiat currency, the bolivar, collapsed. By the way, the US dollar is a phony fiat currency too &#8212; which means it will suffer a similar fate once it finally loses its global reserve currency status.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Today, the Venezuelan bolivar is almost worthless; prices are currently increasing at a rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-03-14\/venezuelas-inflation-surges-new-high-7428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7459% year-over-year<\/a> &#8212; and it&#8217;s only getting worse. Forward!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Venezuela&#8217;s hyperinflation recently caused deli managers at one supermarket to stop ordering ham because, after years of hyperinflation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-03-14\/venezuela-s-hyperinflation-is-breaking-deli-scales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the price is too large<\/a> for the store&#8217;s deli scales. Uh huh. Ham &#8212; when it can be found &#8212; is retailing in Venezuela nowadays for about 1,480,000 bolivars per kilo. Unfortunately, the scales only have six digits. That has everyone in a bad mood. Well &#8230; except for the pigs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> You can bet taxpayers in New Jersey are in a bad mood now that their new governor, Phil Murphy, has proposed taxing online-room booking, ride-sharing, marijuana, e-cigarettes and Internet transactions, as well as raising taxes on millionaires and retail sales. In short, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/politics\/2018\/03\/13\/new-jersey-s-new-budget-aims-to-raise-taxes-on-almost-everything\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">almost everything<\/a>. The reason: funding a record $37.4 billion budget that boosts spending for schools, mass transit and pension fund bailouts. Wow.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> As Zero Hedge observed, &#8220;Murphy said his goal is to give New Jerseyans more value for their tax dollars; instead he plans on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-03-13\/new-jersey-prepares-raise-taxes-almost-everything-it-nears-financial-disaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bleeding them dry<\/a>.&#8221; Heh. That&#8217;s one way to put it. Many many years ago, our federal and state governments existed to serve the people. Today, almost everywhere you go, it&#8217;s the other way around &#8212; and it&#8217;s worse than ever before.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YU6ebNd9v-w?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Frankly, if the governor really wants to provide taxpayers with &#8220;more value,&#8221; then he should focus on working to radically reduce the size of his bloated government &#8212; not increase spending. Just sayin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Don&#8217;t look now, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-03-13\/sound-familiar-home-flipping-us-hits-11-year-high\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home flipping just hit an 11-year high<\/a>. You know what else is higher? Interest rates. Needless to say, rising interest rates are important because the world runs on credit &#8212; and that&#8217;s bad news for house flippers, car dealers, and deeply-indebted American consumers. It&#8217;s also bad for the US in general, which just had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6c0f45ba-220f-11e8-9a70-08f715791301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a $57 billion trade deficit<\/a> in January &#8212; that&#8217;s its largest tab since 2008.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, the red-hot housing market is just one reason why the Fed is determined to cool the economy before it overheats. There&#8217;s just one problem: because fear always trumps greed, I suspect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/view\/articles\/2017-05-25\/fed-is-losing-its-influence-over-the-bond-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Fed will be unable to control rising rates<\/a> in the same orderly manner that they did on the way down, when they were buying bonds.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Dave Kranzler says that, if you dig into the dirty details, you&#8217;ll find that the US Labor Bureau&#8217;s claim that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/09\/business\/economy\/jobs-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">313,000 new jobs<\/a> were created in February is actually <a href=\"http:\/\/investmentresearchdynamics.com\/313k-jobs-added-nice-try-but-its-fake-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake news<\/a>. In fact, those &#8220;impressive&#8221; net gains were concentrated in the part-time workforce; the US saw a net <em>decline<\/em> of 52,000 full-time jobs. You know, the only kind that pay enough to support the typical household of a growing family.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The current &#8220;official&#8221; unemployment rate of 4.1% is the result of the long &#8220;recovery&#8221; that began in June 2009. However, as Paul Craig Roberts points out, there&#8217;s a big problem with that figure: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulcraigroberts.org\/2018\/03\/08\/make-believe-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it doesn&#8217;t include millions of discouraged workers<\/a> who quit looking because they couldn&#8217;t find jobs. Probably because most of those jobs went overseas &#8212; or were co-opted by illegal immigrants who were willing to work for less.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> If we include discouraged workers who have been unemployed less than a year, then the rate is 8.2%. The US conveniently stopped tracking unemployment among discouraged workers out of the labor force for <em>more<\/em> than a year &#8212; but Shadowstats&#8217; John Williams estimates the figure is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadowstats.com\/alternate_data\/unemployment-charts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">close to 23%<\/a>. I know &#8230; but it&#8217;s an easy problem to hide these days because EBT cards have eliminated the need for soup lines.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Finally &#8230; Speaking of soup, a restaurant owner in New Orleans is hoping to raise awareness of racial wealth differences by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/article\/restaurant-charing-white-people-more-racial-wealth-disparity-new-orleans-tunde-wey-nigeria-food-8250341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charging white customers more<\/a>. Yep. White customers can choose to pay: A) the listed menu price of $12; or B) the &#8220;suggested&#8221; price of $30. Even so, 78% of white customers have paid the higher price. No, really. Surely, Martin Luther King is <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id46597-grandfather-says-mlks-dream.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turning in his grave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saturday is St. Patrick&#8217;s Day. Here&#8217;s a closer look at some of the numbers behind this unofficial American holiday:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>60%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of Americans who planned to celebrate St. Patty&#8217;s Day this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>83%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of Americans who planned to wear something green.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>60<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Pounds of dye required to turn the Chicago River green.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/span><\/span> According to the Census Bureau, Boston&#8217;s rank among US cities with the largest percentage of Americans reporting Irish ancestry. Just over half say it depends on the situation which, in my opinion, is the right answer.
