The bigger the distortions, the bigger the bust will be.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Ron Paul<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Desiderius Erasmus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> With the petroyuan due to debut on January 18th, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-01-15\/petro-yuan-looms-bundesbank-adds-renminbi-currency-reserves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bundesbank was adding renminbi<\/a> to its currency reserves this week. There&#8217;s just one problem: China failed to get its new oil-for-yuan contract off the launchpad this week. Instead, the first contracts are now scheduled to begin trading in <a href=\"http:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2018\/01\/18\/chinas-bid-upend-global-oil-market-petroyuan-shanghai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late February or early March<\/a>. So King Dollar gets a reprieve &#8212; albeit a brief one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile &#8230; whether it&#8217;s the tea company that put the word &#8220;blockchain&#8221; in its name only to see its stock rise by several multiple, or the Swiss National Bank, using currency it printed out of thin air to buy stocks, recently selling a portion of its holdings to earn $55 billion in &#8220;profits,&#8221; or the world mired in $233 trillion worth of debt that can never be paid off, <a href=\"http:\/\/theinternationalforecaster.com\/topic\/international_forecaster_weekly\/absurdity_is_the_new_normal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">absurdity is the new normal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> How absurd? Well, Brandon Smith explains that, &#8220;Trillions in uncontrolled central bank stimulus and years of artificially low interest rates have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alt-market.com\/articles\/3350-the-strange-case-of-the-falling-dollar--and-what-it-means-for-gold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poisoned every aspect<\/a> of our financial system. Nothing functions as it used to. In fact, markets move in the exact opposite manner as they did before the debt crisis began in 2008.&#8221; Maybe so, but the stock market bulls aren&#8217;t complaining; they&#8217;re busy reaping profits.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> One blatant example of the markets working in reverse can be seen in the falling US dollar index over the past year, despite the Fed&#8217;s tightening campaign. As you can see, the market is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/dollar-set-to-suffer-worst-year-since-2003-with-10-yearly-loss-2017-12-29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">completely ignoring<\/a> the Fed&#8217;s interest rate hikes:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47044\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/dollar-falling.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47044\" class=\"wp-image-47044\" src=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/dollar-falling.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/dollar-falling.png 500w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/dollar-falling-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-47044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic: Zero Hedge (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, I see that bitcoin spent most of this past week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/stuck-at-12k-bitcoin-price-needs-quick-progress-to-avert-further-losses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tumbling<\/a>, briefly falling below $10,000 &#8212; a 50% drop since mid-December &#8212; before recovering near $12,000. One thing is certain: Anyone who wishes to dip a toe in the highly-speculative cryptocurrency waters better be sure they have the intestinal fortitude to endure bitcoin&#8217;s incredible volatility. No, thanks; I continue to prefer <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id16252-silver-and-gold-the-superheroes-of-wealth-preservation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">physical gold and silver<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/markets\/2018\/01\/16\/401-k-investors-dow-26-000-sign-stocks-getting-risky\/1035610001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stocks are still soaring<\/a>, with higher share prices, rising investor optimism and fresh cash being funneled into the stock market by euphoric investors who fear missing out on gains despite the market&#8217;s lofty levels. Buying stocks still seems to be a smart investment strategy &#8212; at least until the supply of greater fools finally dries up.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> So while most folks are celebrating the big increases in their quarterly 401(k) statements, Jim Rickards is trying to temper expectations by warning that, &#8220;The market is <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/bubble-break-world-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially susceptible<\/a> to a sharp correction, or worse.&#8221; What a party pooper.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Rickards is correct, of course. But for now, the US economy seems to be humming along. Despite the labor participation rate near a multi-decade low, the job market is supposedly as tight as ever, with US filings for unemployment benefits plummeting to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-01-18\/jobless-claims-in-u-s-plunge-to-lowest-weekly-tally-since-1973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lowest level in almost 45 years<\/a>. Hooray!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The tight labor market is one reason why the US Treasury collected almost $400 billion in tax revenue during the month of December. Even so, the government still ran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/terence-p-jeffrey\/feds-collect-record-income-taxes-through-december-still-run-225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a $225 billion deficit<\/a> &#8212; that is an annualized rate of $2.7 trillion added to the National Debt. Can you imagine how bad the numbers will be when the US enters its next recession?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> With that in mind, it should be no surprise that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-ratings-dagong\/chinese-agency-dagong-cuts-u-s-sovereign-ratings-to-bbb-from-a-idUSKBN1F50OU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China downgraded<\/a> the United States&#8217; creditworthiness this week &#8212; as a result, the US is on par with countries like Peru, Colombia and Turkmenistan. Yes, <em>that<\/em> Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, the US doesn&#8217;t <em>care<\/em> what any Chinese rating house thinks. Why should they? Especially with Fitch and Moody&#8217;s in its back pocket. As ZeroHedge notes: &#8220;China&#8217;s move is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-01-16\/china-downgrades-us-credit-rating-bbb-warns-us-insolvency-would-detonate-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">far more political<\/a> than economic, and sends another shot across the bow as the (US) prepares to launch a trade war. Still, Fitch and Moody&#8217;s give the US their top ratings, (despite) their concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7bF38rT7et0?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Let&#8217;s just hope Congress doesn&#8217;t try to close their revenue gap by following Seattle&#8217;s lead. Residents of the Emerald City are now &#8220;enjoying&#8221; a 1.75 cents per ounce (!) sweet-drink tax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/business\/2017\/06\/07\/seattle-becomes-latest-city-pass-soft-drink-tax\/102596234\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed<\/a> by their uber-liberal city council. After the tax took effect, <a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/trending\/soda-tax-sticker-shock-grips-seattle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the price of a case of Gatorade<\/a> skyrocketed from $15.99 to $26.33. Thankfully, that extra tax revenue will be put to <em>really<\/em> good use. On second thought &#8230; no, it won&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US economy definitely improved in 2017 from previous years &#8212; but the employment figures are still sending mixed signals:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>4.1%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The US unemployment rate at the end of 2017; that&#8217;s down 4.7% in January 2017.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>4.0%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Rate traditionally considered by economists to be full employment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>62.7%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The US labor participation rate which measures the percentage of people who are either employed or actively looking for work.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>2,100,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The number of new jobs created in 2017; that&#8217;s the lowest annual figure in seven years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>184,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The number of new manufacturing jobs created in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/business\/columnists\/tomlinson\/article\/Economy-runs-strong-in-Trump-s-first-year-12502886.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston Chronicle<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Question of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><code>[poll id=\"198\"]<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Result<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How many cars do you currently own?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 (37%)<\/li>\n<li>1 (31%)<\/li>\n<li>3 (16%)<\/li>\n<li>4 or more (13%)<\/li>\n<li>None (3%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 1300 people answered this week&#8217;s survey question and it turns out that 3 in 8 Len Penzo dot Com readers own two cars.
