After my vacation in Maui, I know I am!<\/p>\n<p>Off we go &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;No State shall &#8230; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; The US Constitution (Article 1; Section 10)<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;A national debt, if it is not excessive, will be a national blessing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Alexander Hamilton<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8216;How did you go bankrupt?&#8217; Bill asked.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8216;Two ways,&#8217; Mike said. &#8216;Gradually, and then suddenly.&#8217;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8213; Ernest Hemingway<\/strong>, <em>The Sun Also Rises<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/sep\/22\/iphone-8-small-queues-muted-reaction-questions-demand-iphone-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iPhone hype finally over<\/a>? Maybe. Despite all of the pre-sales hoopla for the iPhone8, demand for Apple&#8217;s latest offering has been, shall we say, less than brisk. At least it is if the smaller crowds outside stores and a muted customer reaction are any indication.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The astonishing lack of enthusiasm was <em>so<\/em> pronounced that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-09-22\/embarrassing-2-people-show-iphone-8-launch-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only <em>two<\/em> people showed up<\/a> for the most recent iPhone debut in Hangzhou, China. Not surprisingly, Apple&#8217;s iPhone proponents called that fake news. To be fair, they noted that if you count the security team hired to keep the, er &#8230; &#8220;crowd&#8221; from storming the doors, there were actually <em>five<\/em> people on hand for the iPhone8 debut:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apple-store-fail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45379\" src=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apple-store-fail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apple-store-fail.jpg 480w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apple-store-fail-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, US productivity growth peaked in 1972, the year after the US decoupled the dollar from gold in 1972 &#8212; and it&#8217;s been essentially downhill ever since. However, it&#8217;s been particularly dismal since 2002; believe it or not, US productivity growth since then is only <a href=\"http:\/\/bawerk.net\/2015\/08\/22\/that-70s-show-episode-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on par with the agrarian economies<\/a> from two centuries ago. Is this a classic case of a nation resting on its laurels &#8212; or something else?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> For his part, Paul Craig Roberts wonders <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulcraigroberts.org\/2017\/09\/29\/us-economy-failing-paul-craig-roberts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how American wages can be stagnant<\/a> if one believes the US unemployment rate is just 4.4%, which is generally considered to be full employment. Good question. (Psst. Obviously, <em>somebody<\/em> has been &#8220;massaging&#8221; the unemployment data &#8212; and it&#8217;s one of those &#8220;deep tissue&#8221; massages.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, although real incomes have gone nowhere after more than 40 years, for most people it has continued to feel like their living standard has indeed remained stable. Why? One word: debt. <a href=\"https:\/\/realinvestmentadvice.com\/the-illusion-of-prosperity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">And lots of it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In fact, as financial analyst Dave Kranzler point out, when it comes to debt and &#8220;massaged data,&#8221; it&#8217;s 2007 all over again. At least it is if you consider the financial shenanigans by the usual jackals that led to the Great Financial Crisis of 2008 are <a href=\"http:\/\/investmentresearchdynamics.com\/peak-housing-bubble-the-big-short-is-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">back and bigger than ever<\/a>. Let the good times roll, baby!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=US10Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10-year Treasury bonds<\/a> are currently yielding 2.36%. At the same time, the average yield of corporate junk bonds denominated in euros hit a new all-time record low of 2.30%. Um &#8230; does anybody else see a problem here? Anyone? Bueller?<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uhiCFdWeQfA?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Well &#8230; Wolf Richter does. He calls that perverted yield-dichotomy, &#8220;The central banks&#8217; ultimate accomplishment: The <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/2017\/10\/02\/chart-u-s-treasury-yield-v-euro-junk-bond-yield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">total destruction of the market&#8217;s risk-pricing mechanism<\/a> at the expense of other people&#8217;s money, including funds that play a large role in pension systems.&#8221; Why? Because those yield-starved funds <em>have<\/em> to buy those mispriced corporate bonds.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Richter continues: <em>&#8220;And then there&#8217;s the comforting thought that when <a href=\"http:\/\/davidstockmanscontracorner.com\/price-discovery-rip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">markets can no longer price risks<\/a>, they can&#8217;t price anything at all because the price of risk underlies all financial market prices.&#8221;<\/em> That it does. An economy without accurate price signals is really no different than an airliner flying in the dark without any instrumentation &#8212; and blindfolded pilots. The end result will be the same too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of pension funds &#8230; I see that Kentucky&#8217;s 365,000 teachers and other public employees are now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/news\/politics-government\/article175321961.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demanding that taxpayers contribute<\/a> $5.4 billion to their pension funds &#8212; and that&#8217;s just during the next two years. As Zero Hedge notes, $5.4 billion equates to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-09-26\/teachers-demand-3200-each-kentucky-household-fund-pension-ponzi-2-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$3200 for every Kentucky household<\/a> &#8212; and 25% of the state budget. Uh huh. This, folks, is why these Ponzi schemes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><del>can&#8217;t<\/del><\/span> won&#8217;t go on forever.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> As mega-millionaire publisher Bill Bonner notes, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/america-going-broke-nobody-cares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America is broke and nobody cares<\/a>. But, Bonner says, Americans <em>should<\/em> care &#8212; especially her top 1% who, thanks to the Fed, have seen their wealth soar more than 230% since the Great Financial Crisis of 2008 at the expense of the lower and middle class.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> One thing is certain: When the next financial crisis hits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peakprosperity.com\/blog\/111014\/upon-next-crisis-rules-will-suddenly-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the rules will change<\/a>; they always do. The big question is how will those rule changes affect people&#8217;s attitudes toward the ruling class?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> A potential answer can be seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20171004-spain-europe-catalonia-catalan-referendum-contagion-independence-movements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catalonia&#8217;s most recent drive for independence<\/a> from Spain. That movement is the result a hollowed-out middle class, brought about by 10 years of relentless central bank printing &#8212; spurred by a desperate financially-strapped government promising more than it can legitimately deliver. Will America will see similar movements when public pensions begin failing en masse?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> I&#8217;ll let Mr. Bonner sums things up: <em>&#8220;It&#8217;s all very well for the feds to use crises to take more wealth from the lumpenproletariat, and arm the local police with tanks and assault helicopters to keep them in line. Still, every elite eventually goes too far. <a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/paul-ratner\/the-fall-of-the-american-empire-will-come-by-2030-predicts-famed-historian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Every empire dies<\/a>. And, in the final act, every jackass gets what he&#8217;s got coming.&#8221;<\/em> Amen.
