Paul Getty<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Gold is honest money, which is why it&#8217;s disliked by dishonest men.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Ron Paul<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It is much better to have your gold in the hand than in the heart.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Thomas Fuller<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Don&#8217;t look now, but the Millennial generation is no longer taking out loans solely for cars, houses and college expenses. According to MarketWatch, they&#8217;re now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/millennials-are-financing-everything-from-bed-sheets-to-concert-tickets-2017-08-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financing <em>everything<\/em><\/a> &#8212; from luxury bed sheets to concert tickets. Yes, bed sheets. No, I don&#8217;t understand it either.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, this week <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/china-business\/article\/2107054\/csrc-says-state-meddling-stabilises-china-stock-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China admitted<\/a> their version of America&#8217;s Plunge Protection Team &#8220;stabilized&#8221; the Chinese stock market by purchasing $150 billion worth of various company shares. I know. It&#8217;s just more proof that legitimate price discovery is dead. The real markets died during the Great Financial Crisis nearly a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> China&#8217;s declaration prompted Zero Hedge to ask: &#8220;If Beijing has to hold ($150 billion) in stocks when the &#8216;market&#8217; is stable, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-08-20\/chinas-plunge-protection-team-holds-150-billion-stock-claims-state-meddling-stabiliz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">what will happen<\/a> when things start turmoiling once again?&#8221; That&#8217;s easy: they&#8217;ll just buy the entire market. But then what?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> On a somewhat related note, this week the European Central Bank chair, Mario Draghi, proclaimed that quantitative easing (QE) &#8212; which is a purposely-misleading euphemism for unfettered money printing &#8212; has &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-41021422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made the world more resilient<\/a>.&#8221; He has a point, I guess &#8212; in the same way that North Atlantic icebergs made the Titanic &#8220;more resilient&#8221; too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, over at the Global Macro Monitor, they see a world powered not only by fake news, but also by &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/macromon.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/22\/debate-within-fomc-bubblistas-v-efficient-marketistas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fake economies<\/a> based on fake demand that&#8217;s dependent on asset bubbles, and fake markets dependent on QE and low interest rates. The $75 trillion global-economy question is: When will Truman Burbank realize his world is fake?&#8221; It makes you wonder, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Thankfully, a recent opinion piece in the UK&#8217;s Evening Standard highlighting the systemic fraud within the global financial system and its inherent dangers, suggests that maybe &#8212; just maybe &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/mitchell-feierstein-systemic-banking-fraud-means-next-crisis-will-be-worse-a3618286.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the world is finally beginning to wake up<\/a>. Hopefully it doesn&#8217;t hit the snooze button, turn over, and resume dreaming. (<em>h\/t: Ubik Kosmil<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> For his part, Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) says <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/08\/21\/its-time-to-audit-the-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it&#8217;s time to audit the Fed<\/a>. For the first time since the Fed was created in 1913, Paul&#8217;s bill would shine a light on Fed agreements with foreign governments and central banks, its discount window and open market operations, Fed members&#8217; bank reserves, and Fed committee directives.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> If I didn&#8217;t know any better, I&#8217;d say that it&#8217;s almost as if Senator Paul no longer trusts the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouisfed.org\/in-plain-english\/who-owns-the-federal-reserve-banks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">non-federal Federal Reserve Bank<\/a> &#8212; another purposely-misleading euphemism &#8212; to put its private banking-cartel interests ahead of what&#8217;s best for the United States&#8217; people.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of waning trust, this week the Bundesbank announced it <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1060645\/germany-has-pulled-all-of-its-gold-out-of-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finished repatriating<\/a> 674 tons of German gold stored in New York and Paris, three years ahead of its seven-year schedule. Then again, considering that it&#8217;s not a serious logistical challenge to transfer gold in such large quantities, the task shouldn&#8217;t have taken even seven <em>months<\/em>. Er, unless it was missing and difficult to replace.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> With that in mind, perhaps it&#8217;s no coincidence that US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/steven-mnuchin-mitch-mcconnell-to-visit-fort-knoxs-gold-stash\/article\/2632134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">visited Fort Knox<\/a> this week; supposedly to make sure <em>America&#8217;s<\/em> gold was still there. He&#8217;s the first Treasury Secretary to visit the Fort Knox gold hoard in 70 years &#8212; which is odd because the US Treasury Secretary is the primary custodian of our national treasure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, my tin foil hat is probably on too tight again. To be fair, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/mystery-fort-knox-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I&#8217;m not the <em>only<\/em> person<\/a> wondering why, after seven decades of indifference, a US Treasury Secretary would decide to announce that he was going to personally check on the Fort Knox gold hoard <em>now<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Others are calling it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bullionstar.com\/blogs\/ronan-manly\/mnuchins-pr-visit-fort-knox-proves-nothing-us-gold-reserves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a PR stunt<\/a> &#8212; and an amateur one at that, considering that the Fort Knox visit was announced the morning it took place, and there was no evidence that any media were allowed to participate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The good news is, after the tour, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevenmnuchin1\/status\/899727624594903040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Secretary Mnuchin tweeted<\/a>: &#8220;Glad gold is safe!&#8221; In other words, put the scales and drills back into storage, place the gold bar lists back in their file cabinets, and call off the assayers. Obviously, any doubts about the sanctity of America&#8217;s gold have been thoroughly squelched. It&#8217;s settled science. (Um, as my anthropomorphic <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><del>global warming<\/del><\/span> climate change friends like to assert.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, the Secretary didn&#8217;t mention <em>how much<\/em> gold he was talking about, did he? After all, there&#8217;s no way he could have verified all 4582 tons of the yellow metal that the US claims to hold there during <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coinworld.com\/news\/us-coins\/2017\/08\/treasury-secretary-pays-visit-to-fort-knox-gold.all.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his brief field trip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Frankly, I&#8217;d <a href=\"http:\/\/kingworldnews.com\/john-embry-mnuchin-was-just-being-clever-all-the-gold-is-not-safe-in-fort-knox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">never declare<\/a> that much gold to be &#8220;safe&#8221; after merely peeking into a single compartment and eyeballing the contents &#8212; or holding a single bar in my hand. But, hey &#8230; that&#8217;s just me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mnuchin-gold.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44791\" src=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mnuchin-gold.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mnuchin-gold.jpg 554w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mnuchin-gold-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Finally &#8230; There&#8217;s a reason why I store nearly 200 gallons of potable water in my home: Simply observe the local stores in Texas shortly before the recent arrival of Hurricane Harvey; there were many reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infowars.com\/hurricane-harvey-chaos-customers-fight-as-stores-sell-out-of-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unprepared shoppers<\/a> fighting over dwindling bottled-water supplies. Sad. It&#8217;s a shame that most folks still look at the fable of the Ant and the Grasshopper as just that &#8212; a fable. Don&#8217;t be a grasshopper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gold is extremely rare, which is why it&#8217;s so valuable. In fact, you have a better chance of finding a 5-carat diamond in the ground than a one-ounce gold nugget. Here are a few more golden numbers to consider:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>101,433,250<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Troy ounces of gold mined globally in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>5,465,500,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Approximate troy ounces of gold mined during all of human history.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>68<\/strong><\/span><\/span> The size of a cube, in feet per side, that could be made from all of the gold ever mined. (In other words, it would comfortably fit inside a baseball diamond.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>261,500,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Troy ounces of gold the US claims to have stored at Fort Knox, West Point and other vaults across the country.
