There is no safe store of value.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Alan Greenspan<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Inflation is when you pay fifteen dollars for the ten-dollar haircut you used to get for five dollars when you had hair.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>&#8212; Sam Ewing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Tax season is upon us, so I&#8217;m sure most US taxpayers will be happy to learn that the IRS is <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/14\/irs-blow-to-obamacare-individual-mandate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no longer rejecting<\/a> taxpayer returns that fail to answer Obamacare-mandated health insurance questions. Well &#8230; that&#8217;s one less bureaucratic nightmare Americans have to endure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of bureaucratic nightmares, I see the European Union has reasserted their tyrannical <a href=\"http:\/\/theantimedia.org\/cash-europe-moves-elimination-paper-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intention to ban cash<\/a>. They insist the ban is to thwart terrorism and crime; the real reason, of course, is to support absurd negative real (as opposed to nominal) interest rates and eliminate the risk of institution-toppling bank runs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, considering that <a href=\"https:\/\/mishtalk.com\/2017\/02\/14\/vice-chairman-of-eurothinktank-states-euro-may-already-be-lost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the euro is already a lost cause<\/a>, the bankers&#8217; ulterior motives shouldn&#8217;t be a surprise to anyone. Fortunately, the euro&#8217;s demise isn&#8217;t <em>too<\/em> far off &#8212; and that should make the EU&#8217;s war on cash a moot point.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Last week, Bank of England governor Mark Carney warned that &#8220;the central banks&#8217; 15 minutes of fame was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/news\/central-banks-fifteen-minutes-of-fame-is-nearly-over-says-carney-a7559696.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">almost over<\/a>.&#8221; As if to drive home that point, <em>this<\/em> week Federal Reserve Vice Chair Stanley Fischer admitted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed-fischer-idUSKBN15Q0G0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Fed has no idea<\/a> what comes next. <em>I&#8217;ll<\/em> tell you what comes next, Stanley: a currency crisis, followed by a new monetary system. Bank on it. (Sorry, I couldn&#8217;t resist.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, the Fed has <em>never<\/em> been good at predicting the future &#8212; or even observing the present. After all, as John Maudlin correctly observes, <em>&#8220;<\/em>The Fed not only failed to predict the recessions of 1990, 2001, and 2007 &#8212; it <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-mission\/economists-have-no-clue-about-the-future-c9266e512ec9#.vo9urp5sh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">didn&#8217;t even recognize them<\/a> after they had already begun.&#8221; Yeah, but on the bright side, the Fed&#8217;s track record can only improve from here!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, US Treasury receipts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-02-10\/recession-alert-treasury-receipts-turn-negative-first-time-financial-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">just turned negative<\/a> for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. Why is this important? Because since 1970, every time government receipts turned negative on an annual basis the US was either on the cusp &#8212; or already in the midst &#8212; of a recession. Uh oh.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Here&#8217;s another sign of an impending recession, not to mention a downturn in the housing market: January saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/02\/15\/mortgage-delinquencies-among-some-homeowners-just-spiked-spelling-trouble.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">largest spike in mortgage delinquencies<\/a> in seven years, and delinquencies for those low-downpayment FHA mortgages that are a favorite of first-time homebuyers jumped for the first time since 2006. Double uh oh.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, the US government announced that its inflation indicator for January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/us-wholesale-inflation-sees-biggest-monthly-gain-4-135914064.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">showed its biggest increase<\/a> at the wholesale level in four years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> I hear you: Wholesale price increases don&#8217;t guarantee higher consumer prices. Unfortunately, last month the government&#8217;s consumer price index rose at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-02-15\/consumer-prices-surge-fastest-pace-5-years-real-wages-tumble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fastest pace in five years<\/a> too. Too bad the problem was simultaneously compounded by falling real wages.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Let&#8217;s see &#8230; what do you get when the economy suffers from an increasing inflation rate at the exact same time it&#8217;s mired in a recession? President Jimmy Carter knows; it&#8217;s called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stagflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stagflation<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The good news is stagflation can be killed, but it requires a two-pronged approach: raising interest rates to stop inflation and increasing deficit spending to eliminate the economic stagnation. The bad news is, unlike in 1980, the National Debt is so large now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2016-10-23\/paul-volcker-explains-why-fed-cant-raise-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that&#8217;s no longer a realistic solution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, as Craig Hemke points out, it&#8217;s not as if inflation is suddenly appearing out of the blue; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tfmetalsreport.com\/blog\/8163\/sudden-onset-inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it&#8217;s been here all along<\/a>. What&#8217;s changed is that inflation is threatening to get out of hand. As a result, officials are unmasking their inflation data because they need it to justify additional interest rate increases.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> In case you haven&#8217;t noticed, Craig wears the same tin-foil headgear that I do. His just happens to be in the shape of a cowboy hat. I prefer propeller beanies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Finally &#8230; Kyrgyzstan&#8217;s National Bank governor is urging all of his fellow citizens to save at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-02-15\/currency-pioneers-build-nation-of-gold-bugs-on-ex-soviet-fringes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3.5 troy ounces of physical gold<\/a>. Yes, a central banker actually said that. Either hell has officially frozen over &#8212; or he knows the current monetary system end game is upon us.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Eventually, you may hear a similar plea from the Fed too. However, by the time you do, you can bet they&#8217;ll once again be a day late &#8212; and trillions of dollars short &#8212; because, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gresham's_law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gresham&#8217;s Law<\/a>, there won&#8217;t be any yellow metal available. Think about that. Please.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Valentine&#8217;s Day has officially come and gone. Here is a closer look at some of the numbers behind the holiday:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$136.57<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Amount the average person spent on Valentine&#8217;s Day this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>54<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of Americans who celebrated the holiday in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$1,900,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Amount consumers spent on Valentine&#8217;s Day candy this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>20<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of consumers who bought jewelry as a Valentine&#8217;s Day gift in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>250,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Roses that were grown specifically for the holiday.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$2,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Amount consumers spent on Valentine&#8217;s Day flowers this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>190,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Number of Valentine&#8217;s Day cards that were exchanged in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$1,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Amount consumers spent on those Valentine&#8217;s Day cards this year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Lifestyle\/valentines-day-numbers-money-spent-flowers-candy-cards\/story?id=45480956\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Question of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><code>[poll id=\"151\"]<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Result<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are you expecting an income tax refund this year?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yes (52%)<\/li>\n<li>No (48%)<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m not filing a tax return this year (0%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well &#8230; the 1300 people who answered this week&#8217;s survey question are almost evenly split when it comes to whether or not they&#8217;ll be getting money back from Uncle Sam this year. However, what I found most curious was just four (!) of those respondents said they weren&#8217;t filing a return for the 2016 tax year. Really? Surely that number should be a bit higher than that.
