Strange.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> You know what else is strange? This week, for the first time ever, the US Treasury sold 3-month bills that offered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-10-05\/treasury-sells-3-month-bills-0-yield-first-time-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a yield of 0%<\/a>. Why would anybody lend the government cash for three months with zero return?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Yes; yes. Those who hold gold and silver don&#8217;t receive any nominal interest either &#8212; but here&#8217;s the thing: Unlike T-bills, at least precious metals have <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id21331-100-words-on-a-guaranteed-way-to-preserve-your-wealth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">zero counterparty risk<\/a>. <em>Nada<\/em>. Zilch. Zippo. So there.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Actually, one could argue that people who entrust their savings to the banks today are making <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2015\/09\/18\/investing\/savings-interest-rate-federal-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the same mistake<\/a> as those who are willing to buy T-bills at 0%. No, the FDIC won&#8217;t protect you from systemic collapse &#8212; it has just $25 billion to cover <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2013-03-19\/us-deposits-perspective-25-billion-insurance-9283-billion-deposits-297514-billion-de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than $9 trillion<\/a> of eligible deposits.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, when lenders are willing to loan money at 0% interest, borrowers will recklessly gamble with the proceeds &#8212; and that leads to plenty of malinvestment, not unlike those infamous Chinese ghost cities and, now &#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-china-theme-parks-20151003-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ghost amusement parks<\/a>. No, really.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of malinvestment, check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3239257\/In-America-s-expensive-city-350K-buys-San-Francisco.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">765 square-foot home<\/a> that is on the market today in San Francisco for $350,000. Nope, there&#8217;s no bubble in the Bay Area. True, it&#8217;s not &#8220;turn-key&#8221; &#8212; but it <em>does<\/em> have rustic charm. Okay, maybe not.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sf-house-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33908\" src=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sf-house-2.jpg\" alt=\"sf house 2\" width=\"634\" height=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The preposterous price for that San Francisco, um, &#8220;fixer-upper,&#8221; is yet another reason why it may just be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theburningplatform.com\/2015\/09\/25\/two-outs-in-the-bottom-of-the-ninth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two outs in the bottom of the ninth<\/a> for the US housing market. And I know what you&#8217;re thinking &#8212; but this is the second game of a season-ending twi-night double header.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The last thing city and state governments need is plunging housing prices. Just ask Chicago&#8217;s budget director, Alexandra Holt &#8212; even at these inflated prices, she says a proposed $543 million property tax hike <a href=\"http:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/news\/budget-director-city-property-tax-hike-plan-not-enough-\/1006710\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may not be enough<\/a> to resolve the Windy City&#8217;s pension debt. Incredible.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, when it comes to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/sep\/1\/generous-teacher-pensions-continue-as-illinois-fin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unsustainable government pensions<\/a>, they can always consider Plan B: scale back the original gold-plated promises. I know. I&#8217;ll wait for the laughter to die down before I move on.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> You can bet Chicago municipal employees will get no sympathy from the Teamsters &#8212; 400,000 of them just learned they&#8217;re facing pension cuts because their fund will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/07\/business\/teamsters-pension-fund-warns-400000-of-cuts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">run out of cash<\/a> in the next 10 years or so.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> If you think government pensions are generous, check this out: A recent study found that federal employees now earn <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/issues\/study-government-workers-make-78-percent-more-than-private-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">78% more<\/a> in salary and benefits than private sector workers. You know &#8230; the folks whose taxes provide the funds that support those very same federal employees.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> In other news, I see the Dow, Nasdaq and S&amp;P 500 all ended this past week on another up note. In fact, the S&amp;P rose 3.3% for the week &#8212; which is its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyfinance.com\/2015\/10\/09\/market-wrap-stocks-rise-cap-strongest-week-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best weekly performance<\/a> of the entire year. Imagine that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Then again, to show you just how absurd these &#8220;markets&#8221; are &#8212; Zero Hedge notes that the Dow has miraculously skyrocketed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-10-08\/dow-1000-points-post-payrolls-lows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 1000 points<\/a> since &#8220;the worst jobs data in years&#8221; was released last week. Bah. It&#8217;s all a sham. Believe it &#8212; or not.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Finally &#8230; Did you see this? Clemson University apologized to &#8220;offended&#8221; students after the school sponsored a campus &#8220;Maximum Mexican&#8221; food day celebration. Frankly, I don&#8217;t know who is more pathetic: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/?ID=6873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypersensitive boobs<\/a> who complained, or the <a href=\"http:\/\/housing.clemson.edu\/ourapology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spineless university officials<\/a> who offered the <em>mea culpa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Question of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[poll id=&#8221;83&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Result<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you could travel through time, where would you go?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The past (62%)<\/li>\n<li>The future (38%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 700 people chimed in for this week&#8217;s time-travel question and a significant majority say they would prefer to visit the past. I don&#8217;t know about you, but I think this is a very tough question; if I was forced to choose, I&#8217;d pick the future because, unlike the past, I don&#8217;t have the luxury of recorded history to provide me with any insight &#8212; but, darn, I&#8217;d really like to visit the past too!<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of time travel, here are a few fact on one of my favorite movies of all time, <em>Back to the Future<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>1985<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Year <em>Back to the Future<\/em> was originally released.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$0<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Wages paid to actor Ralph Macchio (of Karate Kid fame). (Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow and Dudley Moore)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>1.21<\/strong><\/span><\/span> GigaWatts of electricity Doc Brown said was required to operate the time machine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>63<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Number of clocks that can be seen in the movie.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>62<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Number of clocks showing the time as 7:53.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>7<\/strong><\/span><\/span> DeLoreans that were used in the movie.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>2015<\/strong><\/span><\/span> In <em>Back to the Future II<\/em>, the year that the hapless Cubs finally <a href=\"http:\/\/fox2now.com\/2015\/10\/08\/did-back-to-the-future-ii-predict-the-2015-world-series-probably-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">win the World Series<\/a>, ending 109 years of futility.
