Me Worry?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/black-coffee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23820\" title=\"black coffee\" src=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/black-coffee.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/black-coffee.jpg 500w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/black-coffee-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><em>It&#8217;s time to sit back, relax and enjoy a little joe<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to another rousing edition of Black Coffee, your off-beat weekly round-up of what&#8217;s been going on in the world of money and personal finance.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, off we go &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Believe it or not, a recent survey found that almost one-third of all people who set aside savings for retirement have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2015\/04\/22\/almost-a-third-of-savers-have-banked-less-than-1000-for-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">less than $1000<\/a> in their golden-years account. Although, with so little being put aside, I&#8217;d say golden <em>week<\/em> is more accurate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> I suppose it&#8217;s not a coincidence that a report released on Thursday found that 56% of all Americans today have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/get-there\/wp\/2015\/01\/29\/the-majority-of-consumers-have-subprime-credit-scores-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subprime credit scores<\/a>. Wow. Think about that for a moment &#8212; and what it says about fiscal discipline and the state of the economy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Oh, well. Despite Main Street&#8217;s pain, Wall Street is booming. This Friday the Nasdaq finally surpassed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyfinance.com\/2015\/04\/23\/market-wrap-stocks-advance-nasdaq-sets-closing-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all-time high<\/a> it reached in 2000 &#8212; just prior to the dot-com crash &#8212; while the S&amp;P 500 set an intraday high before falling back a bit.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> So for the bull market, it&#8217;s onward and upward &#8212; but in some cases, it&#8217;s hard to see why. Consider McDonald&#8217;s: The restaurant has been losing customers for years now which helps explain Mickey D&#8217;s announcement this week that their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/business\/wp\/2015\/04\/22\/diners-still-arent-hungry-for-what-mcdonalds-is-selling\/\">global profit fell 33%<\/a> over the past year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> In a normal market, Golden Arches&#8217; stockholders would be punished on such bad news but, as <a href=\"http:\/\/silver-and-gold-prices.goldprice.org\/2015\/04\/the-gold-price-slipped-16-or-13-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Franklin Sanders<\/a> points out, on the day it was announced, McDonald&#8217;s stock price actually <em>soared<\/em> 3%. I know.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> That example from the Bizarro world is just one reason why money managers like Michael Pento are warning that global stock markets are now <a href=\"http:\/\/kingworldnews.com\/alarming-catalyst-for-the-coming-global-collapse-will-shock-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">completely divorced<\/a> from any sense of economic reality.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Despite the seemingly never-ending stream of upbeat news from the mainstream media, there is a sense out there that <a href=\"http:\/\/endoftheamericandream.com\/archives\/signs-that-the-elite-are-feverishly-preparing-for-something-big\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">something ominous<\/a> is on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> For example, the IMF is warning regulators to brace for a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/economics\/11538509\/IMF-tells-regulators-to-brace-for-global-liquidity-shock.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">global liquidity shock<\/a>&#8221; that will usher in the next financial crisis. Uh oh.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> For its part, the Fed says, &#8220;What? Me worry?&#8221; They just finished a study that concluded their own insolvency &#8220;would not create <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-04-20\/fed-study-finds-fed-insolvency-would-not-create-serious-problems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">serious problems<\/a>.&#8221; Uh huh. The Fed has a point &#8212; but it&#8217;s a weak one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> After all, if you can print legal tender at will then, technically, insolvency is impossible. However, the Fed seems to forget that&#8217;s only true as long as <a href=\"http:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/another-crisis-of-confidence-in-the-dollar-is-coming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confidence doesn&#8217;t wane<\/a>. But it will. And that&#8217;ll be the day the dollar dies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of liquidity shocks, Greece is in a cash crisis of their own <em>right now<\/em> &#8212; things are so bad that their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/economics\/11548973\/Talks-with-Greece-have-gained-momentum-but-still-long-way-from-target-IMF.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coffers could run dry<\/a> in mere weeks. Do you think the Greeks are reconsidering their decision to drop the drachma for the euro yet? I do.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, new electric- and hybrid-car sales are at their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/2015\/04\/19\/electric-vehicles-lose-buzz\/26050135\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lowest level<\/a> in four years. Adding insult to injury, 22% of so-called &#8220;environmentally-conscious&#8221; car buyers who traded them in this year <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/04\/21\/record-numbers-of-drivers-trading-in-electric-cars-for-suvs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bought an SUV<\/a>. Heh.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Let&#8217;s face it: Electric cars make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/business\/project_syndicate\/2013\/04\/electric_cars_they_re_expensive_inconvenient_and_not_even_good_for_the_environment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zero economic or environmental sense<\/a> at the moment; without government subsidies they&#8217;re too expensive &#8212; and the electricity to run them still depends on oil. Then there&#8217;s the battery disposal problem. But, hey, if buying one makes you <em>feel<\/em> good &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span>The truth is, in a truly free market unencumbered by the Fed&#8217;s ridiculous malinvestment-inducing zero-interest rate policy, government subsidies for consumers, and tax breaks for manufacturers, electric cars wouldn&#8217;t see the light of day today. Are <a href=\"http:\/\/thevillageid-vestor.blogspot.com\/2015\/02\/tesla-my-darling-you-suck.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you listening, Elon Musk<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Finally &#8230; If Obamacare is <em>so<\/em> great, why did only 65% of California&#8217;s 2014 Obamacare participants reenroll this year? That&#8217;s beyond disappointing, considering the government <del>invested<\/del> <a href=\"http:\/\/healthpolicyandmarket.blogspot.com\/2015\/04\/1-billion-in-federal-tax-dollars-and.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wasted $1.06 billion<\/a> on the California healthcare exchange.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, Covered California was hoping for 500,000 new sign-ups in 2015. Instead, they said <a href=\"http:\/\/dailysignal.com\/2015\/04\/20\/incompetence-mismanagement-plague-californias-obamacare-insurance-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">just 7.098<\/a> &#8220;selected a plan.&#8221; Imagine that.
