The lack of goods has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.havanatimes.org\/?p=108481\">led to fights<\/a> between desperate shoppers competing for products.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> If that isn&#8217;t bad enough, grocery store employees are now <a href=\"http:\/\/panampost.com\/sabrina-martin\/2015\/01\/08\/a-new-year-a-new-severity-of-shortages-for-venezuelans\/\">threatening shoppers<\/a> who snap photos of the empty shelves. I know. God help the poor supermarket patron who causes a clean-up in aisle six.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Things are so bad in Venezuela&#8217;s socialist workers&#8217; paradise that all 100 McDonald&#8217;s there are no longer serving french fries because of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/business\/wp\/2015\/01\/07\/the-issue-mcdonalds-blames-for-its-french-fry-shortage-is-causing-other-retail-problems\/\">paucity of potatoes<\/a>. So, no, you can&#8217;t have fries with that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Don&#8217;t think what&#8217;s happening in Venezuela <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.lewrockwell.com\/rep3\/learn-from-greek-collapse.html\">can&#8217;t happen here<\/a> in the United States. It will &#8212; <em>if<\/em> the powers that be wait to reset our current financial system until after the dollar finally implodes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> The situation currently unfolding in Venezuela &#8212; and Russia too for that matter &#8212; should be plenty of incentive for you to properly prepare for what <em>could<\/em> eventually be coming to these shores. That is, unless you enjoy long lines and panicked throngs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> What&#8217;s that, you say? The US economy can never collapse? Psst. The math says it <em>will<\/em>. Most folks don&#8217;t realize that our debt-based monetary system requires <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.mises.org\/wiki\/Criticism_of_fractional_reserve_banking\">ever-increasing debt<\/a> to keep the game going.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Why do you think US federal student loan debt is now more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/commentary\/terence-p-jeffrey\/federal-student-loan-debt-tops-800-billion\">$800 billion<\/a>? Seven years ago it was &#8220;just&#8221; $98 billion. And why do think <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/102049575\">29% of all car loans<\/a> are now being given to consumers with subprime credit?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, no one should be surprised that the number of people who are delinquent on their car loans is rising to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/car-loans-see-rise-in-missed-payments-1420768083\">alarming levels<\/a> &#8212; or that the default rate on all of those student loans <a href=\"http:\/\/davidstockmanscontracorner.com\/the-monkeys-are-screeching-and-the-central-banks-are-pushing-on-a-string\/\">is now 30%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The trouble is, unlike the government, people can&#8217;t pay the bills by printing their own cash. As a result, most consumers today are either tapped out, poor credit risks &#8212; or both. In fact, 37% of Americans say they&#8217;re so deep in hawk that they&#8217;re <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mainstreet.com\/article\/too-broke-to-save-money-millions-of-americans-apparently-think-so\">unable to save<\/a> a single penny.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> If anybody tries to tell you that the American economy is reaping the fruits of a six-year economic &#8220;expansion,&#8221; ask them to explain how that&#8217;s working out for the state of Michigan, which has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2014\/12\/29\/michigan-has-more-food-stamp-recipients-than-students\/\">more food stamp recipients<\/a> than students.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, Americans are <em>still<\/em> waiting for real wages to climb back to their 1972 high-water mark. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/real-wages-decline-literally-no-one-notices-2013-6\">No, really<\/a>. Yes, 41 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> It&#8217;s no coincidence that 1972 was the year after President Nixon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/magazine\/the-nixon-shock-08042011.html\">closed the &#8220;gold window&#8221;<\/a>, thereby fully decoupling the US dollar from the world&#8217;s ultimate money &#8212; and unleashing the fiat-money debt monster that will soon bring down the entire flawed system.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> By the way, don&#8217;t hold your breath waiting for that dubious 41-year wage-streak to end: Last month, the average hourly nominal wage for all employees saw its <a href=\"http:\/\/globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com\/2015\/01\/wages-decline-most-on-record-average.html\">largest percentage drop ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> That&#8217;s terrible news, considering the US owes more than $100 trillion in debt and unfunded liabilities. At the current average hourly wage, every American employee would have to work <a href=\"http:\/\/deviantinvestor.com\/tag\/national-debt-per-capita\/\">40 years<\/a> to pay it off. And you thought taxes were high now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s all a charade; the US will never collect enough taxes to pay off its gargantuan debt. Today, the goal is to simply buy time by collecting only enough taxes to service the debt &#8212; but even that modest objective is getting harder to meet with each passing year.<\/p>\n<p>For what it&#8217;s still worth, the latest IRS data on individual income taxes for 2012 show that the the highest income earners in America continue to pay most of the government&#8217;s bills:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>$1,100,000,000,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Income taxes paid in 2012 by 136 million US taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>22.8%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Effective tax rate of top 1% of US taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>3.28%<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Effective tax rate of bottom 50% of US taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>38.1<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of US taxes paid by the top 1% of taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>29.8<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of US taxes paid by the bottom 90% of taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>3.3<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of US taxes paid by the bottom 50% of taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/article\/summary-latest-federal-income-tax-data-0\">Tax Foundation<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Question of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><code>[poll id=\"43\"]<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Result<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How many times do you eat at a sit-down (non-fast-food) restaurant each month?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Twice or less (57%)<\/li>\n<li>3 or 4 (23%)<\/li>\n<li>More than 4 (20%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 300 people answered last week&#8217;s question and the majority of them limit their away-from-home dining to twice per month or less. Over the years, as my income has increased, so has the number of times I take the family out to dinner. When our kids were smaller, we dined out once per month. Today, that number is closer to once per week.
