Here we go &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Credits and Debits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Hold on to your hats &#8212; this week we&#8217;ll finally get to see why Obamacare advocates decided to hide 2015 plan premiums until after the 2014 elections. Preliminary indications are that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2014\/11\/13\/3-things-white-house-doesnt-want-to-know-about-obamacare-plus-3-things-coming\/\">double-digit rate hikes<\/a> will be the order of the day for many states.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> It won&#8217;t be long before we also get to see the negative impacts of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/101393331#.\">the employer mandate<\/a>; that was delayed &#8212; without Congressional approval &#8212; until after the 2014 elections too. I wonder how many more people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NDoA_vTxklI\">who like their doctors<\/a> are going to lose them next year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Of course, this week multiple tapes surfaced of a chief Obamacare architect bragging that the complex law was written in &#8220;a tortured way&#8221; because it was the only way &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/223578-obamacare-architect-lack-of-transparency-helped-law-pass\">stupid voters<\/a>&#8221; would support it. In other words, the ends justified the means. Pathetic.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> I don&#8217;t blame you if that&#8217;s the first time you heard about those incredible remarks. Apparently, ABC, NBC, the New York Times, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press have all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2014\/11\/13\/bret_baier_gruber_brags_your_stupidity_only_reason_obamacare_passed.html\">avoided the story<\/a>. I think <a href=\"http:\/\/mediaequalizer.com\/brian-maloney\/2014\/11\/melissa-francis-nbc-censored-me-over-o-care\">we all know why<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> I see the cost of a college education climbed again. The cost of a single year of in-state tuition and fees at public four-year schools <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-11-13\/college-tuition-in-the-u-s-again-rises-faster-than-inflation.html\">increased 2.9%<\/a> to $9,139. Really? As usual, the increase outpaced the official inflation rate &#8212; not to mention most Americans&#8217; wage gains.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> According to USA Today: &#8220;When adjusted for inflation, students are paying <a href=\"http:\/\/college.usatoday.com\/2014\/11\/13\/stock-up-on-ramen-average-cost-of-college-rises-again\/\">more than triple<\/a> what students paid 30 years ago to attend a public, four-year institution.&#8221; You can thank government loans and subsidies for driving university costs to these absurd levels; the universities do.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> I graduated in 1988 with a degree in electrical engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. To get it, I spent slightly less than $15,000 &#8212; for <em>everything<\/em>: tuition, fees, books, room and board, and general living expenses. And that was over a five-year period, not four.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Unlike college tuition, gasoline prices are continuing to decline. In the US, the average cost at the pump is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/14\/business\/economy\/lower-oil-prices-give-a-lift-to-the-american-economy.html?_r=0\">just $2.89<\/a> &#8212; that&#8217;s 34 cents less than motorists were paying last November.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Strangely enough, Californians, who are used to paying some of the highest gasoline prices in the nation, are currently enjoying an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/bay-area-news\/ci_26917837\/gas-prices-tick-down-even-more-california\">even steeper<\/a> year-over-year decline. At an average price of $3.21, gas in the Golden State is now 40 cents cheaper than the same time last year. I&#8217;m not complainin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports that Hummers are suddenly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2014\/11\/10\/the-hummer-is-back-thank-falling-oil-prices\/\">back in style<\/a>. Don&#8217;t laugh. It&#8217;s no coincidence that sales of those 4-wheeled behemoths have been rising as gas prices fall; I suspect most of them will be kicked to the curb when pump prices climb again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Those lower gas prices have got to be welcome news in Chicago where, according to one survey, 33% of residents are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfoxchicago.com\/story\/27375552\/1-in-3-chicagoans-living-paycheck-to-paycheck\">living paycheck to paycheck<\/a>, have less than $250 in their bank accounts before payday, and don&#8217;t make regular savings contributions. Yikes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> It&#8217;s not just residents in the Windy City who are living on the financial edge &#8212; it&#8217;s the whole country. <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/nearly-half-us-dangling-edge-210100283.html\">Another survey<\/a> found that four in ten Americans now live from one paycheck to the next &#8212; and 20% of people who earn at least $200,000 annually rarely save, if ever. Wow.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Then there&#8217;s this chilling look into America&#8217;s work ethic: A new survey by the Pew Research Center found that 39% of people between 16 and 24 have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/giving-up-40-women-28-men-39-youth-dont-want-a-job\/article\/2556177\">no interest in working<\/a>. At all. Unbelievable. It looks like we&#8217;re in far worse shape than I thought.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For some people, &#8220;work&#8221; truly is a four-letter word:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>37<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of all Americans age 16 and over who are neither employed or actively looking for work.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>86 million <\/strong><\/span><\/span>Americans not in the work force who don&#8217;t want a job now.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>29 <\/strong><\/span><\/span>Percentage of American men not in the labor force today who said they don&#8217;t want a job.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>24 <\/strong><\/span><\/span>Percentage of US men outside the labor force in 2000 who said they didn&#8217;t want to work.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>40 <\/strong><\/span><\/span>Percentage of American women not in the labor force today who said they&#8217;re not interested in being employed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>131,000<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Unemployed people who are able to work, but didn&#8217;t look for a job during the past four weeks because of family responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2014\/11\/14\/more-and-more-americans-are-outside-the-labor-force-entirely-who-are-they\/\">Pew Research Center<\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Question of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><code>[poll id=\"34\"]<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Result<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is the most expensive purchase or investment you&#8217;ve made so far?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My house. (67%)<\/li>\n<li>My education. (10%)<\/li>\n<li>Something else. (9%)<\/li>\n<li>My car. (8%)<\/li>\n<li>My business. (6%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Almost 500 people answered this week&#8217;s survey question and, perhaps not too surprisingly, the biggest expenditure for a strong majority of people has been their home. What is surprising is that just 6% committed their biggest outlay toward their business. I suspect that percentage would have been much bigger several decades ago if only because there were so many more &#8220;mom and pop&#8221; local businesses around. Today, for the most part, they&#8217;ve been supplanted by nationwide retailers. Call me crazy, but I believe those local &#8220;mom and pop&#8221; merchants will rise again &#8212; and I think the failing economy will be the catalyst.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Useless News<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are the top &#8212; and bottom &#8212; five Canadian provinces and territories in terms of the average number of pages viewed per visit here at Len Penzo dot Com over the past 30 days:<\/p>\n<p>1.
