A first class seat on Singapore Airlines runs $13,325 for a round trip ticket between Los Angeles and Singapore. Wow. No wonder a growing number of airlines are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-08-26\/airlines-mull-first-class-future-after-success-of-business-beds.html\">phasing out first class<\/a> seats from their planes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Speaking of high prices, the next time somebody tells you there&#8217;s no price inflation, point them towards a grocery store. Last week, US ground beef prices hit an all-time high. This week, the dairy section was affected. That&#8217;s because butter futures reached a record <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-08-29\/butter-prices-reach-all-time-high-amid-smaller-stockpiles.html\">$2.55 per pound<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> More inflation news; this time from Forbes: <em>&#8220;A new analysis from PricewaterhouseCoopers projects that average premiums for (Obamacare) policies will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sallypipes\/2014\/08\/25\/obamacares-death-of-a-thousand-rate-hikes\/\">increase 7.5%<\/a> in 2015. In nearly one-third of the 29 states that PwC investigated, premiums will rise by double digits.&#8221; <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_o65vMUk5so\">I know<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Looking for more evidence of inflation? Pull up a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/index\/spx\/charts?symb=SPX&amp;countrycode=US&amp;time=10&amp;startdate=1%2F4%2F1999&amp;enddate=8%2F29%2F2014&amp;freq=1&amp;compidx=none&amp;compind=none&amp;comptemptext=Enter+Symbol%28s%29&amp;comp=none&amp;uf=7168&amp;ma=1&amp;maval=50&amp;lf=1&amp;lf2=4&amp;lf3=0&amp;type=2&amp;size=2&amp;style=1013\">chart of the S&amp;P 500<\/a>; the stock market index made <em>another<\/em> all-time high this week after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/101947335#.\">topping 2000<\/a> for the first time ever; less than three years ago it was 1100. Apparently, the economy is really booming. Somewhere.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Unfortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldsqueeze.com\/technical-analysis\/disconnect-between-commodities-and-sp-whats-going-on\">as Goldsqueeze points out<\/a>, there is strong evidence suggesting that five years of unprecedented money printing by the Fed has completely decoupled the S&amp;P 500&#8217;s performance from economic activity. Take a look at this chart, which uses a green circle to indicate the start of the Fed&#8217;s quantitative easing (QE) programs, and see if you don&#8217;t agree:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SP500-and-QE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26747\" src=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SP500-and-QE.jpg\" alt=\"S&amp;P500 and QE\" width=\"510\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SP500-and-QE.jpg 802w, https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/SP500-and-QE-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit:<\/strong><\/span> Correlation does not imply causation, but the graph arguably bolsters claims that stocks in general may be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/robertlenzner\/2014\/06\/20\/the-fading-out-of-the-feds-qe-bond-buying-may-mean-the-end-of-a-5-year-bull-market\/\">unable to maintain their upward trajectory<\/a> as the Fed finishes winding down its latest QE program in October.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The rising stock market is in direct contrast to bond market signals. Already-low long-term US yields have dropped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tfmetalsreport.com\/blog\/6077\/zirp-morphes-nirp\">almost 25%<\/a> this year alone &#8212; which indicate an economy in severe distress. And it&#8217;s not just US bonds; German short-term rates are so low they&#8217;re now <em>negative<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit<\/strong>:<\/span> One thing is certain: The stock and bond markets can&#8217;t <em>both<\/em> be right &#8212; one of them is misreading the state of the economy. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.milesfranklin.com\/ominous-beyond-words\">The answer<\/a> depends on whether or not all of the massive currency printing continues to make things better &#8212; or worse.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Interest is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cibc.com\/ca\/advice-centre\/growing-your-wealth\/interest-rates-investments.html\">rental price of cash<\/a>. Today, the world&#8217;s currencies are so abundant &#8212; thanks to central bank printing presses stuck on hyper-drive during the last five years &#8212; that their rental price is dirt cheap. As such, savers will continue receiving pitiful interest rates.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The Fed printing press is why former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan once assured Americans that, &#8220;The United States can pay any debt it has because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h3cY6_z0ceg&amp;t=0m46s\">we can always print money<\/a>.&#8221; That&#8217;s comforting. Or not.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Credit<\/strong>:<\/span> Of course, that dubious philosophy was also espoused by the central bank of Zimbabwe at turn of the 21st century. In 2009, they eventually saw the folly of that position &#8212; but not before a loaf of bread there reached <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reliefmine.com\/articles\/economy\/215-one-hundred-billion-dollars\">1.6 trillion Zimbabwe dollars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> The quest to turnaround our failing financial system has become so desperate, the highly influential Council on Foreign Relations &#8212; yes, the one led by former US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin &#8212; is now urging central banks to transfer cash <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/articles\/141847\/mark-blyth-and-eric-lonergan\/print-less-but-transfer-more\">directly to the people<\/a>. Hyperinflation, here we come.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> So why propose such a scheme? The truth is, the bankers understand that there are only two ways over-extended nations can get out from under the massive debt overhang that&#8217;s acting as a drag on the world economy: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2014-08-26\/it-begins-council-foreign-relations-proposes-central-banks-should-hand-consumers-cas\">default or inflate<\/a> the debt away.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Debit:<\/strong><\/span> Unfortunately, while inflating the debt away buys time, both roads lead to currency destruction. Sadly, it won&#8217;t be too long before <em>everyone<\/em> learns that there&#8217;s no such thing as a free lunch. The piper is finally knocking on our door &#8212; and he ain&#8217;t leaving until he&#8217;s paid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Question of the Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><code>[poll id=\"23\"]<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Week&#8217;s Poll Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever been the victim of a burglary?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yes (57%)<\/li>\n<li>No (45%)<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m not sure. (8%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More than 200 people responded to last week&#8217;s question and, unfortunately, more than half of them have been theft victims at one time or another. At first, I thought that seemed kind of high; but then I did a little checking and learned that there are 2 million reported home burglaries in the US every year. So maybe that number isn&#8217;t as high as I thought.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the topic of security:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>13<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Number of seconds between home burglaries in the US.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>33<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of home burglaries that also result in assaults.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Number of cars stolen in the US every minute.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>30<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percent of all home burglaries where access is gained via an open window or unlocked door.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>13<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Percentage of all burglaries that are eventually solved by the police.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sources: Safeguard the World<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Useless News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hey, no matter how <em>you<\/em> got here, please be sure to:<\/p>\n<p>1.
