(I realize I&#8217;m probably on on the IRS short list, after that joke.)<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, Uncle Sam has three years to audit a tax return once it has been filed. However, the statute of limitations increases to <strong><em>six<\/em><\/strong> years if you&#8217;ve omitted more than 25% of your reportable gross income on your return.<\/p>\n<p>And even though the odds of being audited are relatively long &#8212; roughly 1 in 100 &#8212; that risk increases dramatically for folks who unintentionally attract the attention of those heartless tax inspectors by waving the following red flags <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/taxes\/tax-returns\/602068\/irs-audit-red-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified by Kiplinger<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Math errors.<\/strong> While these usually don&#8217;t automatically trigger a full-blown audit, they draw additional attention to your return.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Claiming the home office deduction.<\/strong> One of the biggest flags because the deduction is so often misapplied.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taking large charitable deductions. <\/strong>Deductions for <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id1570-reader-counterpoint-why-your-favorite-charity-shouldnt-be-you.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charity should be proportionate<\/a> to income.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engaging in large currency transactions. <\/strong>Transactions greater than $10,000 draw the most scrutiny.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing off losses for a hobby activity. <\/strong>You can deduct hobby expenses, <strong><em>but not losses<\/em>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Claiming rental losses.<\/strong> According to Kiplinger, especially &#8220;losses written off by taxpayers claiming to be <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id1110-real-estate-agents-why-you-rarely-get-what-you-pay-for.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">real estate pros<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deducting business meals, travel and entertainment.<\/strong> The IRS knows these write-offs are ripe for abuse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Claiming 100% business use of a vehicle. <\/strong>Without detailed records for proof, this claim is a tough sell.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Making too much money.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id9958-time-for-a-new-income-benchmark-100000-aint-what-it-used-to-be.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">household income of $200,000<\/a> quadruples your audit risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Running a cash business.<\/strong> The IRS asserts that those who get paid primarily in cash are less likely to report all their income. <strong><em>Ya think?<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Failing to report a foreign bank account.<\/strong> Of course, first they have to discover it; if they do, the penalties are huge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Failing to report all taxable income. <\/strong>Always claim the income listed on <strong><em>all<\/em><\/strong> of your W-2 and 1099 forms. Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/lenpenzo.com\/blog\/id9556-i-earned-how-much-cash-last-year-the-big-mistake-on-my-1099-form.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unless it&#8217;s a mistake<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep in mind that an IRS audit isn&#8217;t the end of the world &#8212; especially when you have the records and documentation to back up all your claims.<\/p>\n<p>However, that&#8217;s no reason to increase your risk of being subjected to a potentially painful and time consuming government probe by waving multiple red flags like a matador at a bull fight. Especially when you consider that those who end up in the ring sometimes get gored by the horns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: smaller;\">Photo Credit:
